It doesn't matter how it's made or how it's powered, by definition a superyacht will never be eco-friendly.
In everything we do, we should ask "could everybody do this, without trashing our life support systems?"
In this case, evidently not.

The only reason some people can own such luxuries is that everybody else cannot. If even a tiny percentage of the world's people commissed a yacht like this, we would quickly cook ourselves.
Gates, it turns out, is not the purchaser. But the point stands: a eco-friendly superyacht is a contradiction in terms.

Beautiful. But ... why is commercial fishing excluded from only 0.04% of our waters? Why can't we see a wonderful resurgence of wildlife like this all around our coasts?

Even in terms of jobs and income, large no take zones are likely to make more sense than commercial fishing. And in terms of defending our wildlife, our ecosystems and our carbon stocks, the difference is off the scale.
PS: Can we invent a better term than "no take zones"? It's a rubbish way of describing places where marine wildlife is rebounding. Suggestions welcome.

#AndrewSabisky appears to have a long record of engagement with the alt-right, and enthusiasm for some extremely racist ideas and movements.
You don't get appointed as an adviser to Downing Street without thorough vetting.
So either the vetting failed...

I'm really, really hoping the vetting failed.
Given his distinctive name, and how easy it has been for journalists to find a trove of his racist musings, you have to wonder how government vetting could have failed this badly.
Could it be that he was just the kind of "weirdo and misfit" Cummings was looking for?

If your answer is “Because someone bumped into me!!!"

It’s the Wrong answer.

You actually spilled the coffee because there was coffee in your cup. Had there been #tea in the cup, you would have spilled tea.
Whatever is inside the cup is what will spill out.

Therefore, when life comes along and shakes you (which WILL happen surely), whatever is inside you will come out.

It's very easy to fake it, until you get rattled.

Maybe I need to be clearer: both @AOC & @realDonaldTrump have said & done some things I *admire*. I assume it goes without saying that I‘m NOT a supporter of either.

So what I’m saying is this: if you’re used to thinking about simply good & bad people, The Portal probably isn’t your podcast. I’m not the best human as host & I don’t know any saints for guests. This is a podcast by and for difficult,complicated, messy & occasionally bad people.
Many of us don’t have a place in *any* new beautiful virtuous world where we talk endlessly on power & oppression and our side, whether Left/Right, is omniscient while the other side is barbaric.

The Portal is about escaping our low resolution views that make us hate each other.

1/ It’s simple to note: One has to subtract before adding. Give up what’s bad, before thinking about adding what’s good. True for habits, food, news and everything else.
#life 2/ We live in a world with many apparent "signals”.

We’re consuming:
- More info/news/entertainment
- More food
- More social networking
- More things to-do/work...

…than prior generations. It’s making us lazy and critically, disengaged.
#life 3/ It’s unclear what the signal to noise ratio is - it’s a function of one’s own consumption habits.

And separately, we’re prone to setting additional goals too:
- Read good books
- Eat a healthy diet
- Have fewer but better friends
- Work smart

etc.

My date followed up by asking, “If your boyfriend asked you to cook for him, would you?” I grinned, as I realised my date was sadly playing from a script. I replied, “I don’t have a guy I like who’s asking me to cook, so I can’t say.”
I think my date thought I was being coy. But, I wasn’t. I was just being honest. A while ago, I decided to deal in reality and not hypotheticals. I have tried and failed to control life. All my effort got me was an anxiety problem and therapy.
