We've overhauled our style guide and made it public, because language and usage evolves and is an ongoing conversation with staff and readers. Heroic leadership by our copy editor @danielkingtime: motherjones.com/politics/2020/…
@danielkingtime Here you can peruse the entire guide. And in the previous link, we ask for any feedback you might have: motherjones.com/media/2020/02/…
@danielkingtime The guide walks you through our thinking on areas of language that are evolving, some of which are about identity:
@danielkingtime Some gems in the capitalization and spellings section
@danielkingtime I am more of a hard-ass on "more than" vs "over" than @danielkingtime
@danielkingtime Whew, the Rs are a journey
@danielkingtime STILL IN THE STYLE GUIDE
@danielkingtime So, inside the guide we have embedded forms for you to tell us questions or concerns, or things we haven't included that we should consider.

As a somewhat general rule, anything we do not discuss we default to @AP style. Except the serial comma. They're wrong about that.
@danielkingtime @AP Style guides are meant to provide reporters and editors with a quick way to look up the best way to spell/treat language. No entry can be the complete compendium of history or debate on terms. Those are important, and the guide takes note of them, but must clip along to be of use
