Attn: grant writers.

Acknowledged or not, #STEM is full of non-neurotypical types. 1/5 of your readers is likely to be dyslexic, and all your readers are likely impaired by fatigue. This is a thread to help readability from a dyslexic’s perspective. (1/9)
1)If the instructions allow, use a san serif font. I personally prefer a softer one like Calibri over Arial which I find results in densely packed heavy-feeling text. (2/9)
2)Do not sacrifice readability for neatness by using right-hand justified text. The lack of visual anchors down the raggedy edge makes tracking harder. REALLY!
I’ve failed in this argument many times, but it is true. (3/9)
3)The gap-width variability between words in right-hand justified text is problematic too. Especially in smaller text boxes associated with figures. (4/9)
4)Create as much white space as possible by using 6 pt returns between paragraphs, headings etc. Never have a full page of solid text. (5/9)
5)Never submit a grant containing consecutive pages of unbroken text. Each page needs a graphic or descriptive subheading (preferably both). (6/9)
6)The subheadings and figure legends need to convey the gist of the story being told in 7-10 words. I find the practice of random bolded and/or underlined words scattered throughout text irritating and visually distracting. (7/9)
7)Use bullet or numbered points. Many dyslexics would communicate exclusively in bullet points, schematics and data-figures if it were an option. (8/9)
8)It’s been many years since I thought of my dyslexia as an impediment. This tread was prompted by a twitter exchange with @purton_louise and @CytokineSignal If you found it surprising, interesting or helpful, please RT. (9/9)
