After his tour through several countries and after generating high expectations in social media, Juan Guaidó returned on February 11th to Venezuela through the Simón Bolívar International Airport, located in the state of La Guaira.
Upon arrival, Guaidó met with a noticeable rejection from Conviasa workers (state airline recently sanctioned by the US) and Chavismo militants, who waited for his arrival at the airport’s arrivals exit.
In a blink of an eye, his smile and the “success" of his tour vanished. He was questioned for supporting and promoting the financial blockade against the country. The photo Guaidó and media were expecting to resuscitate his image, did not materialize.
The picture of a frightened Guaidó seeking to dodge the complains of a community seriously harmed by the impact of the blockade, summarizes the current political picture of the country.
Much was speculated about a possible arrest of Guaidó upon his arrival. After what happened, the skill-set of the Chavismo is again proven when managing situations of tension: betting on the self-weakening of Guaidó, while exploiting the distrust within his own ranks.
Guaidó was betting on a triumphant return that oxygenated his leadership. Being a manufactured media product, he needed the photo to confirm "the country is with him". Important to note he is a deputy for La Guaira, he was at home but failed to mobilize his own supporters.
For its part, Washington, author and financier of Guaidó’s international tour, was expecting for a chaotic action against the self-proclaimed politician, an arrest, so they could martyrize him, take him out of the race and earn new arguments for a coup.
What happens next? An increase in the aggressiveness of his speech to avoid being questioned as a weak leader. That will reaffirm that every American "sanction" and every threat will be answered with popular mobilizations and political unity by the Chavismo.
Washington loses another battle in the field of political imagination and the Chavismo assumes control of the political race, wins the first round of the year 2020 and officially goes on the offensive.
