Gibraltar’s deputy chief minister Joseph Garcia criticises the EU’s approach to the Rock. He says there was ‘no generosity’ from Brussels but instead ‘threats’ and ‘inflammatory’ remarks and ‘the bullying of a tiny territory by a huge supranational organisation’.
Garcia urges EU to avoid a 'medieval approach which tramples over the rights of Gibraltarians to determine their own political future, which puts flags and nationalism first, where citizens, businesses and neighbourly relations are merely afterthoughts that can be sacrificed'.
Garcia: 'Border fluidity for everyone = greater prosperity for everyone. Residents, workers, and tourists. A pragmatic, well-balanced and sensible solution to the border is as much in the interest of the neighbouring region of Spain and EU as it is in the interest of Gibraltar.'
Gibraltar deputy chief minister Joseph Garcia: 'We need to genuinely seize the moment to obliterate the politics of the past. We must move away from the negative to the positive, away from talk of vetos and exclusions because citizens want to hear solutions and not threats.'
Garcia: 'As we leave the EU there's a degree of logic...the club will support its members as opposed to 3rd countries. But it’s important to remind the EU of the values they themselves stand for and like to preach - of defending democracy, human rights, and the rights of people.'
