3rd day of #ESOz2020 conference, but I can’t share slides of the first talk as the speaker specifically requested it. Meaning this talk will not be included in my notes.
Meanwhile please enjoy my compilation of tweets for the 2nd Day of the #ESOz2020 conference here threadreaderapp.com/thread/1229576…
But I’m still thinking about the request of not tweeting (publicising) your work/research... it has happened to me before (even specifically requested do no write/show anything from their research)... what is the point? Don’t you want to share your work and talk about it?
The speaker made the point, though. Their team has (*) submitted a paper to @nature and they don’t want to have problems... pity because interesting talk about very actual issue #ESOz2020 (*) have? Here “their” is singular, I don’t want to reveal the gender of the speaker
Next is Stuart Ryder @MQPhysAstro @MQSciEng @AstroAustralia presenting “VLT observations of the host galaxies of Fast Radio Bursts” #ESOz2020
A bit more info about the #FRB (Fast Radio Bursts) detected with @CSIRO_ATNF ASKAP & the search of their host galaxies summarised by Stuart Ryder @MQPhysAstro @MQSciEng @AstroAustralia #ESOz2020
Stuart Ryder @MQPhysAstro @MQSciEng @AstroAustralia also discusses the relation of #FRBs with optical transients like supernova. Summary included, combining @CSIRO_ATNF ASKAP + @ESO VLT observations is great! #ESOz2020
Now is Adam Batten @adamjbatten presenting his PhD research at @Swinburne supervised by @astroduff & Emma Ryan-Weber & part of @ARC_ASTRO3D “The Intergalactic Dispersion Measure in the EAGLE simulations” #ESOz2020
Adam Batten @adamjbatten @Swinburne @ARC_ASTRO3D uses EAGLE simulations to derive a relation between DM (property of FRBs) & redshift & develops a code “FRuitBat” to derive properties of FRBs, host galaxies and Inter-galactic medium #ESOz2020
Now is amazing @tzafar_astro @AAOMacquarie @MQSciEng talking about “Dust, its composition and evolution in the Universe” at #ESOz2020. She uses GRBs (gamma-ray bursts) for studying the dust in the Universe
Tayyaba Zafar @tzafar_astro @AAOMacquarie @MQSciEng summarises the dust properties in the Local Group and compare with those obtained using GRBs: their extinction curves are very different! #ESOz2020
Tayyaba Zaffar @tzafar_astro @AAOMacquarie @MQSciEng also studies which metals can contribute to dust & the relationship between metals and dust formation. Her summary slide is also included #ESOz2020
Next Maryam Arabsalmani @ICRAR @ARC_ASTRO3D presents “Neutral gas around massive star explosions, the beacons of star formation through cosmic time” #ESOz2020
Where are the GRBs /SLSN progenitor form? Maryam Arabsalmani @ICRAR @ARC_ASTRO3D asks. She studied 2 cases combining CO @almaobs data: a kind-of spiral and a metal poor dwarf galaxy. Found molecular clouds with extreme properties #ESOz2020
Very nice results shown by Maryam Arabsalmani @ICRAR @ARC_ASTRO3D when combining the neutral gas data for the dwarf galaxy: found galaxy interactions, a collision with a companion object (it sounds familiar). Summary slide included! #ESOz2020
After a coffee break (that included very tasty scones, thanks LOC) Celine Peroux @ESO gives a talk review about “Cosmic Evolution of Baryons and Metals” #ESOz2020
Celine Peroux @ESO discusses the (mild) cosmic evolution of the metallicity, where are the metals? Is there a missing metals problem? #ESOz2020
Celine Peroux @ESO also explores atomic and molecular gas behaviour with redshift and shows a very nice example that combined atomic, ionised and molecular gas combining MUSE/VLT @ESO and @almaobs data. Take home messages slide included. #ESOz2020
Next is Elaine Sadler @sifa_astro @CSIRO_ATNF @ARC_ASTRO3D talking about “Neutral hydrogen in the distant Universe”, presenting results from the FLASH “First Large Absorption Survey in HI” at the ASKAP. Why conducting such survey? #ESOz2020
Some examples of HI absorptions obtained using both @CSIRO_ATNF ATCA and ASKAP radio-interferometers shown by Elaine Sadler #ESOz2020
Summary and next steps shown by Elaine Sadler @CSIRO_ATNF @sifa_astro @ARC_ASTRO3D at the end of her talk “Neutral hydrogen in the distant Universe” #ESOz2020
Next Glenn Kacprzak @Swinburne @ARC_ASTRO3D presents “Tracing outflows and accretion using OVI absorption” at #ESOz2020
Now Bronwyn Reichardt Chu @Swinburne @ARC_ASTRO3D presents “Mapping Outflows and the CGM in Starbursting Disk Galaxies”. She also shows a beautiful @keckobservatory spectrum #ESOz2020
They are looking for outflows, Bronwyn Reichardt Chu @Swinburne @ARC_ASTRO3D developed a code for measuring outflows fitting components to spectral lines. Interesting results found in IRAS 08339+6517 #ESOz2020
@Swinburne @ARC_ASTRO3D While writing the name, IRAS 08339+6517, I realised this was one of the galaxies of my PhD! I have special feelings for this paper, I did EVERYTHING (from planning observations to analysis/writing) & learnt A LOT. It has an HI tail & companion #ESOz2020 ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2006A%26A.…
Very nice talk by PhD student Bronwyn Reichardt Chu @Swinburne @ARC_ASTRO3D “Mapping Outflows and the CGM in Starbursting Disk Galaxies”, and it was her very first science talk! Congrats & continue that great work! #ESOz2020
Next Carlos De Breuck talks about “Quiescent carbon in the CGM of high redshift radio galaxies” also combining MUSE/VLT @ESO & @almaobs data #ESOz2020
Nice results shown by Carlos De Breuck in his talk, conclusions & future work slide included #ESOz2020
Last talk for today #ESOz2020 is Matthias Steinmetz talking about “Reconstructing the formation history of the Milky Way with RAVE/APOGEE”
