@MetcalfeMegan @grahamelwood .@grahamelwood :
Let us see. Tulsi has been/is a member/co-chair of Congressional Caucus on India and Indian-Americans
1. Tulsi has a nonpartisan relationship with India. She has met with Modi/other members of his party as well members of his main opposition party, Indian ...
@MetcalfeMegan @grahamelwood 2. Modi/his party BJP is center-left on economic issues - many socialist programs that you cannot count using 2 hands, while at the same time privatising non-profit government companies. india was almost fully socialist from 47-91. Hence why center-left.

He is center-right ...
@MetcalfeMegan @grahamelwood ... on social issues (moving towards the center).

Anyone tells you he is far right, fascist, just know that person is following propaganda or is a propagandist. Will show below how.

3. As far as the accusation of Islamaphobia or anti-Muslim sentiments go ...
@MetcalfeMegan @grahamelwood ...there are some members of BJP who are anti-Muslim and have a loud mouth. But they do not make up anywhere near a majority. Modi/BJP policies as a whole are not anti-Muslim. Modi has his set of faults. He is a "politician" if you know what I mean. But he has done good ...
@MetcalfeMegan @grahamelwood ...work and continues to do so.

4. Modi govt abolished triple talaq, has given and is continuing to give millions of scholarships to Muslims, is modernizing+funding madrassas.

@MetcalfeMegan @grahamelwood 5. Now lets get to Jammu&Kashmir. Article 370 was bad, highly discriminatory. Abrogation of Article 370(&35A) ensured that women in J&K had equal rights, there could be private investment from people outside the state, decriminalized homosexuality there and ensured dignity ..
@MetcalfeMegan @grahamelwood ...for classes of people like Valimikis. Now whenever this was abrogated there was bound to be tension because of these forces ...

@MetcalfeMegan @grahamelwood ...terrorists, violent separatists (who want to be seperate from India&Pakistan), corrupt politicians in J&K, people spreading hate+fake news.

Hence why they had restrictions. These restrictions were being eased wherever/whenever it was safe to do so. Unfortunate necessity...
@MetcalfeMegan @grahamelwood ....not meant for deliberate suppression of people there.
@MetcalfeMegan @grahamelwood 6. About the brouhaha with regard to Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), I got to say WTF is wrong with so many people. firstly any person can lawfully apply for citizenship/refugee in the normal way, regardless of his/her religion. What CAA does it grant citizenship for ...
@MetcalfeMegan @grahamelwood ...minorities (who have been persecuted) in the 3 Islamic countries (Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh) and those who came to India before Dec 31st, 2014 (have been living as illegal immigrants). It excludes Muslims because these are Islamic countries and Muslims in general ...
@MetcalfeMegan @grahamelwood ...are not persecuted on a religious basis there (again, keyword general)

There is a corresponding US legislation : Lautenburg amendement that is somewhat similar.

it does not affect any existing Indian citizens. the reason why I say WTF at people criticizing India/govt ...
@MetcalfeMegan @grahamelwood ...for this is that they are blaming India for giving citizenship for these persecuted people who are living in mediocre to bad conditions > 5 years.
But not blaming the religious persectution that went and is going on in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.
@MetcalfeMegan @grahamelwood 7. The most commonly used argument against Modi - the 2002 Gujarat riots. He was investigated for several years under a hostile government (that was the opposite party to his) - the Indian National Congress and was cleared by a neutral Supreme Court of any complicity or ...
@MetcalfeMegan @grahamelwood ...negligence.

The 541-page SIT closure report says Gujarat CM Narendra Modi took all possible steps to control the 2002 riots.

@MetcalfeMegan @grahamelwood 8. Which leaves us with Assam NRC ..

The foreigner determination process in Assam is complicated and requires careful understanding.

Four things you’ve heard about NRC that aren’t strictly true

a. The NRC is anti-Muslim
b. The NRC is the brainchild of the BJP
@MetcalfeMegan @grahamelwood c. Non-inclusion in NRC would mean instant detention
d. NRC-rejects will be deported to Bangladesh

@MetcalfeMegan @grahamelwood 9. Calling Modi a "nationalist" in the American sense of the word is a joke. He has travelled so much and done so much diplomacy with so many countries. Oh and he was the 1st Indian PM to visit Palestine, increased funding&voted against Israeli annexation of Palestine ...
@MetcalfeMegan @grahamelwood ...in the UN. India maintains good, friendly relationship with Israel as well FTR.

@MetcalfeMegan @grahamelwood 10. Finally let me cap off with a thread of some of the criticisms I have of Modi. its is not exhaustive, but it does provide some context of his/his govt's negatives.
