THREAD: Following the #CAA2020 I would like to share the slides and Q&A from the #publishing session, how to get published and read, last Friday with @ivittieditor and @Arts_Routledge
@ivittieditor @Arts_Routledge There are so many journals! Tip: find the journal first before writing. Are you writing for a large generalist audience or would you have greater impact in a more niche pub? Find out about themed issues. Consider what is needed for you: publisher? readers?
@ivittieditor @Arts_Routledge recent authors? online only publications? metrics like Impact Factor or indexing services? type of peer review? submission process and avg length of time? Open Access? Who is the editor? Who is on the editorial board? Who are recent authors?
@ivittieditor @Arts_Routledge How to break that down and find trusted journals? Check out @thinkchecksub, a publishing industry initiative helping you make informed choices
@ivittieditor @Arts_Routledge @thinkchecksub Tip 2: narrow your list further by looking at each journal's aims & scope statement. Usually a paragraph summing up what each journal seeks to publish and who its main audience it.
@ivittieditor @Arts_Routledge @thinkchecksub A list of Dos and Don'ts. Points like reading the Instructions for Authors (IFAs), having a colleague read it before submission, have a strong & relevant title & abstract. Don't leave acronyms unexplained, don't forget attachments...
@ivittieditor @Arts_Routledge @thinkchecksub For image #permissions, wait until after acceptance to obtain but know what the requirements are from the copyright holder. Consider how necessary it is to include or if it can be easily searched by readers. Costs are often the author's responsibility.
@ivittieditor @Arts_Routledge @thinkchecksub A good abstract is key to making your work more #discoverable. Use key phrases that would make sense and is engaging for those in & out of your field. What would make someone want to read your research? Why?
@ivittieditor @Arts_Routledge @thinkchecksub Don't forget the #ethics involved before you submit! This includes self-plagiarism, sending in an incomplete paper just for feedback, and what I usually see: submitting the same manuscript to multiple publications. Learn more about ethics from @C0PE
@ivittieditor @Arts_Routledge @thinkchecksub @C0PE A general checklist of what your submission may require. Remember to confirm with the IFAs (acronym defined above) :)
@ivittieditor @Arts_Routledge @thinkchecksub @C0PE Submitted? Now it's time for peer review. Generally the editor(s) will be checking to see yr manuscript fits the scope of the journal & meets the IFAs. 2-3 reviewers will be selected, feedback provided, decision and then revisions. Revisions are good! cntd
@ivittieditor @Arts_Routledge @thinkchecksub @C0PE Few manuscripts are accepted without revisions. Revisions help improve your work. Reviewers, editors and editorial boards have a deep interest in supporting you & the journal in publishing the highest quality work. Don't take it personal.
@ivittieditor @Arts_Routledge @thinkchecksub @C0PE Easier said though? Handling reviewer comments: Try to accept feedback but if you disagree with a query don't be afraid to defend your position or reach out to the editor for guidance. Journals are like joining a convo, this also happens during peer review.
@ivittieditor @Arts_Routledge @thinkchecksub @C0PE BUT, if you are rejected, that's ok too. Take some time, use the comments for the next stage of yr paper, whether you want to resubmit or find a better place for your work
Tomorrow I’ll continue with #bookspublishing and #selfpromotion ✌🏾
