Abdihakim Osman told the Daily Mail that Omar married Ahmed Elmi, who he says is Omar's brother, in a Christian ceremony outside of the Minneapolis Somali community so as to keep the marriage secret.
The two legally married on Feb. 12, 2009, in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, south of Minneapolis, before both enrolling at North Dakota State University in 2010. Omar has said that she split with Elmi in 2011, and the two were officially divorced in 2018.
“She said she needed to get papers for her brother to go to school," Osman, 40, told the Daily Mail. "We all thought she was just getting papers together to allow him to stay in this country. Once she had the papers they could apply for student loans."
