New: Trump’s new intel chief Ric Grenell, widely known as a Trump loyalist, called Trump “dangerous” and spoke out regularly in favor of John Kasich in 2016, according to deleted tweets we reviewed. He also called Trump “reckless” and “unserious.” politico.com/news/2020/02/2…
Former Florida governor and GOP candidate Jeb Bush got some love too. “@JebBush is right,” Grenell’s account tweeted on Oct. 28, 2015, during that campaign cycle’s third GOP debate. “@DonaldTrump talks about foreign policy like it’s a simple board game. #Unserious.”
Grenell shifted his support to Trump after he became the GOP nominee. He promoted the WikiLeaks releases, praising daily caller and IJR’s Wikileaks reporting as “excellent.” He called on NBC execs to “take action” against @KatyTurNBC for not tweeting about WikiLeaks enough.

CIA and ODNI have been providing daily coronavirus updates and briefings to the Senate and House Intel Committees, and are coordinating with NSC, focused primarily on whether other countries are truthfully reporting the number of coronavirus cases to the WHO.
The IC’s role is arguably more urgent now--with the epicenters of coronavirus in high-priority counterintelligence targets like China and Iran--than it was during the Ebola outbreak, where countries were generally transparent and welcoming of foreign help.

New: Skeptical of ODNI from day one, intel veterans are spooked by Trump's efforts to politicize an office they never wanted—an office w/ a grip on the PDB, whistleblowing & source protection, and broad discretion over the IC’s responsiveness to Congress. politico.com/news/2020/03/0…
ODNI has been most effective as a day-to-day manager focusing on bureaucratic and budgeting issues, giving agencies freedom to focus on core missions. But its authorities can easily veer into the political and revive friction that plagued its relationship with the IC early on.
If confirmed, Ratcliffe will have to allay concerns about politicization of intel during an election year & strike a delicate balance between Trump, who is seeking to rein in the so-called “deep state,” and intel agencies that have long resisted any perceived overreach from ODNI.

The office of the director for intelligence serves as the day to day connective tissue between the intelligence community and the White House. Sensitive information coming in from the intelligence agencies will go to that office, especially if it is in hard copy form... 1/
2/ The office also coordinates covert action activities between the WH and the intelligence community, and it’s where the NSC server is housed that stores the most sensitive classified information. Ellis’ new job was previously held by a career CIA officer detailed to NSC.
