Thread: Dear candidates, media outlets and debate moderators

There are more “black issues” than police brutality, stop & frisk and criminal justice. And I’m not talking about that disingenuous conflation of class, race and economics that ignores white supremacy.

Here’s a list.
Education funding:

Majority white school districts receive $23 billion more than nonwhite school districts. That’s $2,226 pers student. Even POOR WHITE schools get better funding than the raver age black school, according to @EdBuild
College debt:

Again, it’s not class, it’s race

@theSBPC posed as borrowers from PWIs, HBCUs and community colleges. They found that HBCU students with the same credentials as PWI students received higher interest rates.
12 years after finishing college, black grads owe 113% of their original student loan debt while white borrowers owe 65% of their original debt.
Speaking of debt:

@propublica found that banks charge black homeowners higher interest rates. Black borrowers also pay higher rates for car loans.

Yet the Trump administration’s HUD Dept is trying to eliminate measures to report disparities.
Institutional Redlining: Why are homes in black neighborhoods valued, on average, at $48k less than identical homes in white neighborhoods with the same crime rate, resources and amenities, according to @BrookingsInst?
Why do people in nonwhite neighborhoods pay higher car insurance rates even when the crime rates, etc are the same?
Voter suppression:
We talk about voter purges, but they rarely mention that black voters wait longer; polling places in black neighborhoods have fewer voting machines and less reliable technology.

MOST of the polling sites closed since 2012 have been in nonwhite neighborhoods.
Disparate Impact: This is a little wonky but the Trump administration (and the GOP in general) has been fighting against the legal principal that says a policy is unfair if it negatively impacts nonwhite people more than whites.
Access to healthcare and nutrition: If you live where more white people live, you automatically have access to healthier food , more healthcare and LOWER PRICED food and consumer goods.
This is white supremacy. This is also why I bristle at people who get their info off of YouTube instead of books and ask what “Obama did for black America”
Well, his DOJ sued every major financial institution for discrimination.
His DOE warm end every school in America against punishing black students at higher rates.
The SBA increased funding to minority-owned businesses. He used “disparate impact” to reform housing practices in cities and states. The DOE pushed colleges to reform race-blind admission policies.
Trump is still trying to end the Obams Student Loan forgiveness program. That program also addressed health disparities.

And you know all those people who are getting out of jail under the First Step Act?
I think it’s almost malpractice when media outlets attribute that to Trump.

In 2010, OBAMA signed the Fair Sentencing Act. It targeted the racist crack vs cocaine sentences. Republicans wouldn’t support it until Dems removed the stipulation that made the law retroactive
If you read the first draft of the First Step Act, it did not address sentencing reform, nonviolent drug offenses or any disparities.

@ColorOfChange and @PrisonPolicy lobbied Dems not to sign it unless it did.

But the GOP didn’t actually have a CJR plan, so what did they do?
They just took Obama’s Fair Sentencing Act and made it retroactive.
But most media outlets won’t say shit because they won’t call a thing racist EVEN IF IT IS BLATANTLY RACIST. They will call this “journalistic integrity.”

But, not pointing out white supremacy is one of the biggest reason white supremacy exists.
And, when it comes to “black issues,” candidates, debate moderators and pundits are happy to talk about stop & frisk, police brutality and prison policy because THAT IS HOW THEY SEE BLACK PEOPLE.
Meanwhile, the system that creates these problem flourishes.

That’s why I also could give less than a fraction of a fuck when people say that I’m “obsessed with race.”

I wish more people were.
