I spent all of today in the office, and a lot of it working to finish marriage cases which may otherwise have serious problems when the new #publiccharge rule kicks in Monday. So long as they are postmarked today they're in under the wire. Off to USPS now!
All of these couples are employed, none with any history of taking public benefits. None of them would clearly pass the new #publiccharge test.

My own white US citizen family took more benefits (Sec. 8, WIC, etc) in my early years in Lansing than nearly all of my clients; certainly more than anyone I'm filing for today would. Strange to think #publiccharge would have kept *me* from immigrating as I go to file these.
I wanted this photo to include my middle finger but didn't want to have to explain to the nice postal worker why I was flipping her mail off

The Trump Administration's new #PublicCharge rule is cruel, immoral, and mean-spirited. It prevents hardworking, low-income taxpayers who are here legally from using or even applying for programs that they qualify for.
This will have a devastating impact on thousands of families in #Massachusetts. Let's be clear here: there is already a public charge rule on the books. The only goal of this dramatic expansion is to tell families they're not welcome unless they are wealthy and white.
Think about this: Trump's own @DHSgov said this change could result in “worse outcomes, including increased prevalence of obesity and malnutrition, especially for pregnant or breastfeeding women”, and “increased rates of poverty and housing instability.”

The Trump public charge rule on its face is an elitist push to tell immigrants that they must achieve the American dream somewhere else before they can come here.

It favors wealth over family in determining who can come and stay here.
It punishes immigrants for the low-wages their employers pay & is license to discriminate against ppl w/disabilities/health conditions.

This is VAST departure from status quo. Public charge currently means institutionalization at gov's expense or subsisting on public cash assist

The new rule "redefines the term 'public charge' to mean an alien who receives one or more designated public benefits for more than 12 months in the aggregate within any 36-month period (such that, for instance, receipt of two benefits in one month counts as two months)."
New definition of “public benefit” to include:

-cash benefits for income maintenance
-SNAP
-most forms of Medicaid
-Sec 8 Housing Assistance (Housing Choice Voucher)
-Sec 8 Project-Based Rental Assistance
