Was gonna crack a joke here, then realized ... you could reasonably describe the Karl Rove era as when Republicans made the quantum leap from monitoring to observability, and Democrats did not.
Democrats were still counting precinct by precinct when Rove introduced micro targeting, voter segmentation based on marketing metadata, etc.
And then used that data to redistrict themselves a legislative majority with a minority of the vote, in 2010. >_<

For what little it's worth, I've been a Warren fangirl since we were both Republicans. 🙃 Her book "The Two-Income Trap" had a huge impact on me in my 20s.
