I need not have worried. That article has been doing the rounds today, but it's from 2017.

In September 2019, the majority of the operation was sold to an agricultural investment fund. Doesn't solve the issue, but means the original chap is off the hook.

Of course, now that the farm's owned by a faceless fund, they'll have no qualms about chopping the business to bits to survive, if that's what it takes. Their only concern will doubtless be the bottom line.

(June 30 is the deadline for a transition period extension. If he can get a deal before then, he can avoid 6 months potentially on death row before our economy is laid to rest on 31 December. Past June, we go from desperate to super duper duper duper desperate.)

A couple of weeks of coronavirus supply chaos, and Jaguar are already flying in car parts in suitcases.

How long can UK manufacturing survive past 31 December 2020 if we don't have an EU deal in place, and have to suffer the full no deal Brexit impact?
I wouldn't want to guess, but I think it's several orders of magnitude less long than EU-based firms can if they face friction trading with the UK market.
So if you're say a German car manufacturer, do you?

A) Come galloping over the hill to save the UK, like Gandalf and the Rohirrim army lifting the seige of Helms Deep

B) Watch Brexit kneecap your competitors in short order, and take a chunk of the business freed up

EU countries’ position on #Brexit delay being described to me still as a “cacophony” - some for short, others for long, some for strict conditions, others more relaxed BUT /1

EU has almost given up trying to understand what’s going on in UK.
Dutch PM Rutte compares Theresa May to Monty Python knight whose limbs get cut off in a duel but insists the fight was a draw. Elsewhere in EU, mood is darker esp with the prospect of a lengthy #Brexit delay 1
With UK politics mired in confusion, only thing EU can control this week is choreography at EU leaders’ summit, starting Thurs. Donald Tusk, EU Council president is visiting capitals to try to co-ordinate single EU response if/when Theresa May asks for article 50 extension 2
Today Tusk is in Berlin and Paris – the EU superpowers. But when it comes to delaying Brexit, any one of the EU’s 27 leaders has a veto. The decision must be unanimous 3

Albeit largely technical, agencies will have huge implications on Brexit.

Five points stand out in particular:
First, Agencies matter. Like the customs union, they are a technical aspect of the EU, that works and was thus hardly discussed in the UK before #Brexit.
But they are important for single market, but also justice and home affairs.

UK gov thus has already asked to continue participation in selected agencies, in particular in sectors important to the UK economy, like aviation, chemicals or pharma.

1/ Small thread on Fish - hot topic of the day & cause of so many angy replies on my Timeline.
The big question: How can it be that an industry that has less full time employees than a village - circa 8 500 people - be so controversial?
How can this be driving our #Brexit future?
2/ first some context - not only does fishing (traditionally understood) employ barely a village - but this is not new.

UKs fishermen great decline happened post WWII but pre EEC.

In economic terms fishing is barely 0.1% of UK GDP!

3/ Next the UK imports much of the fish it eats & exports much of the fish it catches - there are complex reasons for this but a main one is taste.

Thats how trade works.

UK doesnt import fish "because of EU", it imports fish because it prefers to do so rather than eat its own.
