I've never seen an article like this in the Lancet. It's not a study, it's a cry for help.

Chinese medical workers seem to be using academic journals as way to route around censorship and get a message out to the world.

The coronavirus has now killed more people than 9/11.
These are just confirmed deaths. In places like Iran it may be far worse.

I was thinking this in early Feb given the scale of the outbreak and the potential for contagion.

The virus crisis is the starting gun for this decade, like the financial crisis was for the 2010s and 9/11 for the 2000s.

It will dominate the conversation.

Good thread.

I’d add that insurers *may* lack the money to pay claims if 40% of the US gets it and 20% is hospitalized.

We may get two systems:

1) Basic care: universal vaccines and treatments funded with printed money

2) Premium care: pure cash system for everything else
Pandemic payouts may be the new credit default swaps.

Just like default rates spiked simultaneously, millions of people become sick at the same time.

And all the policies become due at once.

I doubt that insurers have budgeted for this insurance pandemic. Worth looking into.

Two bits
1) Chinese state is subsidizing costs exceeding policy amounts

We are now truly in World War V, the war against the virus.

A human adversary would be preferable. The virus needs no budget, runs 24/7, is fully decentralized, infinite morale.

We can’t win this with bombs, printing money, sarcastic articles. Only with science and technology.
MDs & nurses on frontlines will do their best but they aren't trained or equipped to fight something like this.

We must remove all regulatory & financial barriers to rapidly create and distribute antivirals & vaccines.

That means expanded right-to-try AND free treatment.
This cuts across ideological lines.

Remove regulatory barriers to drug approval by expanding right-to-try laws to cover anything virus related.

And remove financial barriers by printing money *not* to prop up stocks in general but for treatments/vaccines.

Actually, this is an interesting topic to talk about -- not just for YouTube, but for country-based #censorship in general. There are ways around it and it's good to know of them in the event your government, employer or ISP go insane. This is going to be long so brace yerself!
The nuclear option for getting around a censored connection is the @torproject (torproject.org). It WILL work, but it may be slow, inconvenient, and overall a pain to use. It can be configured to connect through a specific country but that's not it's main purpose:
It is designed to help people anonymise themselves online and to get around censorship imposed by governments, employers and ISPs, rather than the web services themselves. So, for @tuyoki's use case above, this is a bad fit, but for many others it might work great.
