It’s wild how many articles about this fail to mention that Florida passed a law after the Parkland shooting that requires police to be in every elementary school in the state. And Orlando police have the highest rate of police violence in FL.
Instead, this and other articles frame this case as an outlier incident - the youngest child ever arrested. By failing to tie this case to the laws, policies and police depts with records of misconduct, the media preserves the systems that will continue harming black children.
We‘ve seen this framing. It’s all about a single case and one “bad” officer who just happened to have a record of misconduct and just happened to be assigned to an elementary school. This focuses the audience on holding one officer accountable, but leaves the system in place.
