The 2016 presidential election cost $2.4 billion for all presidential candidates combined. Bloomberg has $60 billion, more than enough to buy a presidency (+ Congress for an extra $4B). The winner of the election controls a government with $4 Trillion in spending power each year.
Nobody should be able to have a billion dollars. And NOBODY should have enough to buy politicians, laws ($1-5M/law) or political systems. If we allow people to amass enough money to purchase a political system, don’t be surprised when they use it to purchase our political system.
This whole thing is a golden investment opportunity for people like Trump and Bloomberg (and the Koch’s and other oligarchs). Invest a few hundred million, reap billions or even trillions in economic resources/power.
Now we’re in a dynamic where many people believe the only way to compete against the ruling oligarch is to nominate an even RICHER oligarch to run against them. Democracy is not feasible in a world where people are allowed to amass enough wealth to purchase the whole enterprise.
