@pmdfoster was informed & grounded on biz view of actual Brexit.
James Forsyth waxed lyrical about Brexit being a success as we can have looser restrictions on driverless cars in 2030....
Nothing sums up Brexit so much as this.
On one side those having to deal with the myriad costs & threats to actual business “now”.
On the other side those cheerleading for potential gains years, even decades down the road on theoretical things in a dramatically changed UK.
There’s 2 problems with this.
Govts aren’t elected on potential benefits in a decades time - there elected now.
How do you even know what industries - like driverless cars - will or even could benefit from Brexit in future if Brexit destroys your current car industry now?
These points sound small - they aren’t.
The problem with Brexit is, for it to even have a chance of working, it needs the population to accept it is a long term project with huge initial costs/dislocation.
But this would destroy any govt in the short term.
Trying to understand Brexits internal logic is helpful even if you disagree.
This is why Govt so angry at present. The plan for Brexit was the EU would “let” UK keep much of the benefits of EU trading relationship whilst allowing UK to sieze Brexit’s long term advantages...
It’s now clear opposite likely to happen. The UK will lose out in the short term while any theoretical long term advantages to Brexit recede into an uncertain distance.
Remainers are fond of citing Brexiters lies, but it’s worse than that..Brexiters fooled themselves.
