I genuinely don’t get why brexiters are so angry now at the EU’s negotiation stance.

The UK has left the EU.
The UK is thus a 3rd country.
Regardless of whether you think Brexit is great or awful - the EU can decide what it wants.
It’s not the job of the EU to help non members.
The EU is a tennis club:

Gold membership:
£500pa fee
Use all incl. VIP facilities
Vote/seat on board

Silver membership:
£100pa fee
General access
Consultation/no vote

Non-member:
Use facilities on pay-as-you-go basis when members not playing

Time to decide what you want.

Nothing sums up Brexit so much as this.

On one side those having to deal with the myriad costs & threats to actual business “now”.

On the other side those cheerleading for potential gains years, even decades down the road on theoretical things in a dramatically changed UK.

There’s 2 problems with this.

Govts aren’t elected on potential benefits in a decades time - there elected now.

How do you even know what industries - like driverless cars - will or even could benefit from Brexit in future if Brexit destroys your current car industry now?

One of the strangest - & yet oft uncontested - arguments that brexiters make in favour of UKs power over EU is our trade deficit with EU.

But the argument that UKs trade deficit is so big we can dictate to the EU collapses as soon as you seriously examine it.

Firstly imports are financed by money UK can spend as a function of money it earns/flows from elsewhere. It’s a measure of quality of life.

Thats why it’s curious why people seem to want to risk this.

Secondly many of the imports are impossible or very costly to substitute.

What does the UK import from EU?

High quality cars
Food/wine
Precious metals/gems
Industrial equipment
Medical equip
Medicines

Many of these are essentially impossible/costly to substitute for home made products.

But even those that are, like cars...

Hard to exaggerate crisis hitting UK farming now - within space of just months UK farmers face:

1. Reductions in subsidies
2. Potential (tariff free) competition from cheaper lower regulated countries
3. Greater restrictions (& perhaps with tariffs) to its main EU export mkt

Now that a ‘No Deal’ #Brexit is looking like the most likely outcome, I would (again) bang the drum for how this is really bad news for anyone who moves data btwn the UK & EU, and vice versa.

Here’s why:
Right now, as an EU country, the UK is part of the region’s privacy regime, meaning that anyone (tech company, bank, retailer) can move data freely across the EU-28. It’s the lifeblood of the economy, particularly for professional services — something that the UK does really well
But in a no-deal scenario, that ready access is turned off overnight. No ifs, ands or buts. The UK says it’ll keep data moving from its side to the EU (yay!). But the EU says you won’t be able to move data from EU-27 to UK, unless you have special mechanisms in place

"#Brexit and EU agencies", our extensive look into third country relationships of the 36 EU agencies and how the UK might fit in.

Albeit largely technical, agencies will have huge implications on Brexit.

Five points stand out in particular:
First, Agencies matter. Like the customs union, they are a technical aspect of the EU, that works and was thus hardly discussed in the UK before #Brexit.
But they are important for single market, but also justice and home affairs.

UK gov thus has already asked to continue participation in selected agencies, in particular in sectors important to the UK economy, like aviation, chemicals or pharma.
