The NYT has shifted on Bolivia from pro-coup to aligning itself with parts of the “gringo left” that insist on demonizing Evo, MAS, and Indigenous supporters for “overreach.” The North’s third way — “neither Evo nor coup” — is still the imperialist way.
In the Indigenous movement in the North, Bolivia has been a wake up call. We watched in horror as right wingers and “leftists” in the United States cheered on a fascist coup and the toppling of an Indigenous government. This coup was decades in the making.
The paper of record has adopted the dominant anti-anti-imperialist position — which is more vigorously against a democratically elected leftist Indigenous president than actual fascists.

Indian massacres and Indian hunting have returned to Bolivia, with help from the US. In the last month from "concerned" environmentalists, the media, and even some "leftists", we've heard: Evo burned down the rainforest. Evo is an extractivist. Evo is a machista. 1/
Evo sold out the social movements. Evo is not a "real" revolutionary. Evo is drunk on power. Evo should have stepped down. Evo had a mansion. Evo didn't listen to us. Evo is a narco-trafficker. Evo is a terrorist. Evo is a criminal. Evo manipulated the Supreme Court. 2/
Evo is a dictator. Evo is authoritarian. They froth at the mouth when Indigenous people get power. And they won't be satisfied until Evo is dead. Let this be a lesson to us. 3/ theguardian.com/world/2019/nov…

I see the Indigenous-led resistance against the rightwing coup in Bolivia as the vanguard of the climate justice movement. Why? Bolivia is at the forefront against US imperialism, the number one enemy of the planet.
I part ways with the North Americans who viciously attack Evo Morales yet prop up US politicians and only North-centered solutions when the US is playing no positive role in the world or for the climate and in fact is benefiting greatly from the crises.
The current rush to control Bolivia’s lithium reserves is a prime example. As northern economies take us down a path of ruin, their proposal to consume in a “post-carbon” world at the same rate means they’ll need lithium batteries to run their electric SUVs.

Some of the world's most melancholy ruins are the concrete remains of the Maginot Line.

This border wall of concrete fortifications, traps and weapon installations was built by France in the 1930s to deter invasion by Germany, and today it forms a tragic monument to those days.
After the horror of the First World War, it was clear to many in Europe that the world had reached a new phase of armed conflict.

Much of the countryside of Eastern France was now a ruined and pockmarked wasteland.

French decision-makers knew that the victory of 1918 had relied on the help of the British Empire & the United States.

With a return to isolationism in the UK & USA, France now had no guarantee of this kind of help in future wars. They knew that alone, France could be defeated.

1. "Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House" by Michael Wolff. Yes, I hate-read this book in a matter of days. Problematically, Bannon comes across as an articulate, insightful source and not an arch nationalist parasite. Will Wolff's depiction be hagiography in the future?
2. "The Invention of the White Race, Volume 1: Racial Oppression and Social Control" and "The Invention of the White Race, Volume 2: The Origin of Racial Oppression in Anglo-America" by Theodore Allen. Who knew how important Bacon's Rebellion (1676) was to the history of racism?

So far we learned about some pogroms 😠(1171 France, 1190 England) and Maïmōnídēs dying 😢(1204 Egypt).
JewishHistory is filled with sorrow and darkness but it gets better in the 2nd half of the 20th century 😉

THREAD showing evidence I've come across that suggests the recent murder of a young Jewish man in California was committed by a neo-Nazi, possibly as a politically motivated killing. (Sat on this for a week waiting on editors but now bits of the info are already out, so fuck it).
On January 2nd a 19-year-old Jewish man went missing in southern California. He turned up dead on Jan 9th, buried in a shallow grave in Borrego Park (wikimapia.org/#lang=en&lat=3…). A former class-mate was arrested on suspicion of the murder on Jan 12th.
The deceased is Blaze Bernstein and the suspected killer--now charged with the murder--is Sam Woodward, 20. (Referred to here on out as Blaze and Sam). See the next tweet for the LA Times story.
