For Brexiters claiming the UK should take a leaf out of Singapore's book, consider that Singapore conducts the vast majority of its trade with its near-neighbours in Asia. That would be like us conducting most of our trade with... the EU. Funny, that!

An established principle of economics is the gravity model of trade. Countries trade with each other based on proximity and the size of their economies. So we do a vast amount of trade with the EU (big *and* close), a lot with the US (big *but* far) and less with everywhere else.
This can be influenced a little by tweaking other factors (e.g. introducing or removing tariffs or non-tariff barriers) but it's impossible to get around entirely. Our biggest trade partner *has* to be the EU. Any artificial moves we make to get around that are doomed to fail.

But the truth is, we *all* lost. And we can't just "get over it".

Here are 91 examples of what Brexit took from us all... and what we could gain if we joined the EU again.

1. Full unfettered access to the largest trading bloc in the world.
2. Free trade deals with dozens of countries around the world, including Japan, Canada and South Korea.

3. Frictionless borders allowing for just-in-time manufacturing, supporting millions of jobs in the auto industry, aerospace etc.
4. Wide-open border between Northern Ireland and Ireland, with no customs or other checks between NI and the rest of the UK.

5. Active support for the Good Friday Agreement and Irish peace process (NI benefitted from PEACE funding of over 1.5 billion euro between 1995 and 2020)

Boris Johnson [in his press conference]: "I was at a hospital the other day where there were a few coronavirus cases. I shook hands with everybody, you'll be pleased to know. And I'll continue to shake hands with everybody."

Doesn't sound like very sensible advice!
Now, I don't believe there is cause for panic about the coronavirus. Far from it. But it seems to me that one of the easiest of all precautionary measures is to refrain from hand shakes for a few weeks. Bow, nod, pat each other on the back, whatever - so many decent alternatives!
Meanwhile, the UK and EU negotiators agreed not to shake hands because of the coronavirus outbreak...

Here's a wild idea that might make a lot of sense! 💡

Why doesn't our negotiating team at the EU ask for the maximum 2-year transition period extension immediately...

...then say "we'll circle back in 6 months or so on Brexit, but let's lick the coronavirus together first"?
After all, we're talking about a unique "black swan" event that has the potential to hit us worse than the 2008 financial crisis.

Surely only the most extreme radical Brexiters could object to pressing "pause" under such impossible circumstances? Most people would understand.
(This isn't a secret backdoor attempt to thwart Brexit. Unless you've been living under a rock the last few weeks, you'll have noticed we've *already left* the EU. Article 50 no longer applies. There's no way to "remain" no matter how desperately some might wish to.)

Me : Yes. There are significant structural issues with the EU caused mostly by the EC, its control over the legislative process, the corporate lobbying within the EC and its neoliberal slant.

Me : In the short term? Well, that really depends upon whether Boris et al turn out to be one nation Tories or whether they rush for a cheap economic boost with a US trade deal whilst glossing over the problems. I have my doubts over Boris.
... a brexit under Corbyn including possibly a EEA docked to EFTA path would have been the better path in my view but that was scuppered by hostility to EEA/EFTA then some fairly daft moves led by a remain faction in Labour and the resultant election. C'est la vie.

The vertical takeoff & landing-capable F-35B, in particular, could be especially valuable for the Singapore given its ability to operate independently of runways or potentially from the flight deck of larger amphibious ships the country also plans to acquire in the future.
It's hard not to see the South China Sea & China more broadly, behind Singapore’s interest in the F-35. Singapore is heavily reliant on the maritime trade that crisscrosses through that body of water. Other areas, such as the Malacca Strait, could become choke points in a crisis.

Red Hen’s owner would’ve made far greater impact had she covered her walls with posters showing how undocumented farm workers are exploited by our food system- would’ve been a useful lesson for her customers, plus picture Sarah Sanders & crew degusting surrounded by such posters.
Every restaurant owner wanting to make a point should do this - instead of turning admin officials away, cover your walls and menus with facts about undocumented farm worker exploitation, and serve them, to remind them why meals at that price are possible
Any restaurant owner protesting the admin but still profiting off this exploitation (which is a legacy of slavery, now increasingly affecting Mexicans as they replaced black farm workers over the decades since 1935) isn’t really doing it right
