X : You were in favour of Brexit?
Me : Yes. There are significant structural issues with the EU caused mostly by the EC, its control over the legislative process, the corporate lobbying within the EC and its neoliberal slant.
X : Will things get better in the UK?
Me : In the short term? Well, that really depends upon whether Boris et al turn out to be one nation Tories or whether they rush for a cheap economic boost with a US trade deal whilst glossing over the problems. I have my doubts over Boris.
... a brexit under Corbyn including possibly a EEA docked to EFTA path would have been the better path in my view but that was scuppered by hostility to EEA/EFTA then some fairly daft moves led by a remain faction in Labour and the resultant election. C'est la vie.
... at this moment, I would suggest the "one nation Tories" take a serious look at some of the policies in Labour's manifesto. There was some good stuff in there despite the mess of messaging ...
... as Deng Xiaoping would say "it doesn't matter whether the cat is black or white but whether it catches mice" .. a pragmatic approach of creating opportunity in all the societal interest will be needed.
i.e. take a leaf out of China's book, focus on the long term play, focus on the wiider interest and not just narrow groups. There's also a lot of good stuff in Dominic's Odyssean Education but too much worship of Silicon Valley. They need to look East more.
So, overall ... we shall see. Whilst some patterns you can anticipate (caused by aggregate action) others are driven by individual action. The steps made over the next year will be critical.
X : What does than mean for the UK?
Me : Impact of leaving will be somewhere between great and awful depending upon the individual actions of the executive and the policies they pursue. If it's great expect them to take credit, if it's awful expect them to blame the people.
X : Are there any indicators?
Me : Early days. But there are some signs and to be fair they are more positive than not.
X : Such as?
Me : Huawei.
X : Any others?
Me : Renationalisation of Northern Rail. There are some positive indicators. Give them time, the election is over. Don't be too quick to judge.
