Look... I have no issue with the tech being interesting. What I have an issue with is calling it "serverless".

However, you have to build the application in a "cloudstate-y" way.

So you're building a "cloudstate-y serverless" application.
Akka sidecars and kubernetes pods...

Question: who runs this?

Please can all those people thinking it's a good idea to build a "free" app for foodbanks because they read about a Tory MP who charges £180 for an app per foodbank actually stop and think please?

1) apps *already* exist for foodbanks that are free or low cost

Your idea is not new, but there is a problem. Most foodbanks are run by volunteers and supported by community groups and faith groups. They are small, and not tech savvy

2) "Free" is problematic

My Dad runs a foodbank. I've been teaching him how to use Google Forms and Google Sheets. It's pretty much all he needs to run the foodbank.

The difficulty is in the *sourcing* of food. The "what food we need" problem.

I remember from my student days, a lecturer saying it's impossible for a business to be ethical once it gets to a certain size: The value judgements of a customer business will inevitably be in conflict with the ethics of the business itself.

Can I find a reference? No

Anyone?
The reasoning is simply that you can't control large numbers of peoples thinking so you either have to accept a smaller market that accepts your ethics, or accept that your ethics will be compromised.

At least that's what I remember from the lecture.
It's easy to find examples of this if you think about it.

Someone said my idea for a "restrictions against use for modern slavery and [or] oil extraction" open source license was a great idea.

Because it's obvious to me that if software was released under this kind of license, most of us would be fine in the tech world, but it would put some big companies and governments in legal problems.

And that could be interesting.

Because licenses are our superpower.
It's how we as an industry started to fight back in the 90s against big tech.

Maybe we can take that fight to big oil.

Maybe it's naive but maybe, just maybe it's also a plan that might work.

In an error situation, you want to be able to find things instead of having regrets that you didn't index.

[ed: this conflates logging to local disk vs centrally *indexing* it. Honeycomb won't be a full logging product, but it does point to where debug logs live...] #QConLondon

@sarahjwells They've been operating microservices for many years. But sometimes the complexity leads to debugging challenges.

They had a bug in their 'streams' service that was 404ing content, but nobody remembered where the service lived, how to back up, etc. #qconlondon
It eventually got fixed, but only after 20 minutes of indecision and timidity.

#serverless advocates - we are doing something wrong. I have been putting this off for a long time but I really think it is important and has to be said. Warning: LONG thread.
The trigger for this thread was a talk I gave at #DevOpsDays Edinburgh. It wasn't the talk per-say, but the whole conference experience (which was awesome, but that's a topic for another thread).
Here I am, with around 200 people who really care about the DevOps culture and practices - and so little of them has any experience with serverless tech.
