This article is talking about the math, as I was a few days ago. Italy has only a little above 5000 ICU beds available. On top of that, they have a shortage of nurses and doctors due to cuts over the last 15 years. repubblica.it/cronaca/2020/0…
Let's do the math. Italy has a population of 60.48 million people.

Let's say only 12.5% of the entire population gets ill in the next few weeks from the virus. That would be 7.56 million people.
Of that 7.56 million people, let's say 15% of them become critically ill (the percentage is actually higher in China, closer to 25%; link below).

That would mean that 1.1 million people would need to be in the ICU.

And they have only 5000 ICU beds - and that's for all medical needs, not just coronavirus. Do you get it now? Do you understand why China was building hospitals in a matter of days?
repubblica.it/cronaca/2020/0…
It's not overblown to be closing schools, warning people to prepare for disruption of life, saying "wash your hands wash your hands wash your hands wash your hands." Italy can afford for a FRACTION of a percentage to get this virus.
And this doesn't even take into the added complications of - while dealing with a crisis - disruption of supply chains, medical personnel being sidelined due to their own illness, services breaking down due to lack of workers, people with non-corona illness also critically ill.
What we can do right now: listen to experts on what to do to slow the spread (including WASHING YOUR HANDS, REALLY WELL)
If and when it comes to it, if we have to stay inside, it's the LEAST we can do to help our friends, neighbors, country, and fellow humans. Washing our hands and using sanitizer is the LEAST we can do. Staying home while sick is the LEAST we can do.
Don't freak out. Prepare and take care of the things you DO have control over (washing hands, preparing your household, staying informed).
The more you can do now and as part of your daily life, the less you'll be a strain on our systems, allowing it to serve those who are more vulnerable than you are. Here is a practical, detailed list of steps you can take to prepare:
