Few days ago,I made my opinion public by saying I fared better under @MBuhari's admin than GEJ's,some people felt offended and wailed uncontrollably under my tweet.
I think they need to know the policies am talking about and how these policies have helped serious farmers.#THREAD
Its important that you all know that government policies alone can not make Nigeria self sufficient in food production. People needs to be involved.Increased food production must be championed by Nigeria farmers. As a nation we must produce what we consume.
#TotalBanOnImportation
Policies are only meant to support and encourage farmers which I believe the Presidents body language and act has shown enough for serious farmers to place all hands on deck and to be successful.
One of such policy I will mention is the Anchors Borrowers Program. #ASKQUESTIONS
The Anchor Borrowers' Programme (ABP) was established by the CBN and launched by President Buhari on November 17,2015
It is intended to create a linkage between anchor companies involved in the processing and small holder farmers(SHFs) of the required key agricultural commodities
ABP provides farm inputs in kind and cash (for farm labour) to small holder farmers(CLUSTERS) to boost production of these commodities. At harvest, the SHF supplies his/her produce to the Agro-processor (Anchor) who pays the cash equivalent to the farmer's account.
I have participated and benefited from this scheme myself under the Osun OBOPS II program inaugurated by former Gov. @raufaregbesola. In partnership with @Sterling_Bankng, farmers were given 2000 broilers to rear and off-takers such as @natnupreneur nd Sayed off-take harvest.
The program is also popular among the rice and soya beans farmers in the North.
According to CBN, ABP in partnership with state governments and several private sector groups, have disbursed a cumulative sum of N55.526 billion to over 250,000 farmers who cultivated almost
300,000 hectares of farmland for rice, wheat, maize, cotton, soybeans, cassava, etc
The program has also contributed to the creation of an estimated 890,000 direct and 2.6 million indirect jobs.
Wondering why the price and availability of Maize and other staples have been stable?
Presidential Fertilizer Initiative (PFI) is another good policy. PFI was launched in December 2016 as the outcome of a partnership between the Governments of Nigeria and Morocco, and implemented as a Public-Private Partnership in Nigeria,
led by the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) and the Fertilizer Producers and Suppliers Association of Nigeria (FEPSAN). Remember how President Buhari visited Morocco twice. This also brought down to Nigeria the country's PM.
This presidential initiative also revived moribund fertilizers company in Nigeria. I know a fried that got employed recently in one.
I also remember as a maize and vegetable farmer during GEJ's era, fertilizers used to be a scarce black market commodity.
In 2013/14,I could remember vividly that NPK was so scarce that we have to bribe and que for it at a very unreasonable price. Then the narrative was that fertilizer is subsidized. You have to be connected to access it. Remember the petrol subsidy scam? Same thing as for fertilizer
Since the PFI, fertilizers becomes more readily available and at a more cheaper rate in the last 4 years. Like I said, the price of all this inputs needs to be reduced as I believe more needs to be done in this area. A reduced cost of input means reduced cost of production.
The Presidential Economic Diversification Initiative (PEDI) is also supporting and reviving moribund agro-allied industries. More farm estates are reopening and getting loans for restructuring.
NIRSAL is also trying to give loans to farm clusters who have genuine off-takers.
You can walk to your state CBN offices and post offices to make inquiries. 23 Billion was recently released to NIRSAL. Today, the banks are leaned towards substantially increasing their lending to the agricultural sector. At least, I know of Jaiz Bank agricultural package.
The border closure has also contributed to the lots of the poultry farmers in the recent time. I have supplied more birds this year than ever as a result of the implementation of the ban on poultry product.
5 years ago,it is really difficult for anyone to dress chickens as a result of the imported ones that are cheaper and unhealthy. But today, people are rearing birds for processors and some of us selling birds are really happy.
Implementation of the ban on imported poultry was poor
The school feeding program of the federal government has also encouraged and support more farmers to be more productive. I have sold eggs to them, my records is with the Osun state government for anyone who want to check. They buy eggs with premium price. if you know, you know..
I am not saying the climate is perfect for Agriculture in Nigeria and I agree government needs to do more on her folds. Access to funds is a major constraint facing the farmers in Nigeria. Government needs to provide good rural access road for commodity transfer.
Agricultural mechanization is also another major issue the government need to look into.We need improved seed and our dying agricultural research institutes should be revived. We need to do agriculture the modern way. The government also need to provide incentives to farmers.
Access to free medicare and no interest loans. Agriculture should be subsidized.
Government will not plant maize nor raise chickens and cattle for us,we must stand up and produce what we consume. Its only d people that can make policies work not by sitting down and wailing.
Dont forget, I can help you with your farm setup and planning.
I also have quality 16 weeks old Point of Lay birds.
