#Resistance Twitter created an unusual moment. It really was a group of people coming together in common cause who don’t otherwise necessarily have a lot in common. There’s been lots of talk about the grifters and the #NeverTrump Republicans, but the celeb aspect is notable, too.
Many people were able to read a lot of themselves or at least their hopes for “fixing things” into all three of those groups. As efforts proceed to do so electorally, though, people are starting to split back off again. It’s jarring — but also somewhat inevitable.
I’m still 🤭 by the Bette’s tweets myself, for example. But, at least for the Democrats among all of those people, it’s a primary — and it’s a real fight for the party’s direction and vision. So, we’re having at it. And I think that does make our party — and governing — stronger.
The “what happens after the primary” and “what happens if Dems win” questions about unity and governing aren’t necessarily answered by that, for sure, but I think it was good that people came together to counter Trump — and now are diverging to express their hopes for the future.
I think both sides of that — and the very fact that both can happen and did happen — are signs of the continuing strength of our democracy.
Anyway, enough earnestness for now. ... But, that’s been poking around in my head today, so, there it is.
