I am not denying the role of sexism in national elections; I was an early Klobuchar supporter and I believe I said something to the effect that it was pretty galling to see Bloomberg pass Liz and Amy in the polls just by showing up. Yes, sexism is real. /1
My argument is with the people writing off Warren's loss to sexism, and refusing to see a bad candidate who ran a bad campaign that was full of mistakes. Klobuchar was a dark horse from the start, but Warren had star power, media love, celebrities. This wasn't about sexism. /2
I, too, look forward to the day when a candidate's gender, race, sexual identity, and other ascriptive characteristics don't matter. But I also wish we could talk about good and bad campaigns without invoking blanket explanations like sexism; you don't learn from that. /3
And a candidate's personality is never NOT going to matter in a democracy. That's just how it is. Wonky and condescending aren't winning combinations. Hell, if they were, I could win tomorrow!

So, this is a Saturday thought before I have to go do a zillion things, but talking with @dangainor made me wonder about something. (This is not about Dan or a zinger at him.) It's about a generational issue I have with both the left and right in 2020.

Growing up during the Cold War, making a class transition from working class to professional class after getting an education, and studying the Soviet Union for as long as I did - I wonder now if that makes me hyper-sensitive about people who deploy class warfare rhetoric. /2
For me, class warfare was poisonous and stupid. We didn't know a lot of rich people, but the idea of storming the mansions of Bellevue Avenue seemed to be the kind of thing college kids dreamed up while the rest of us had to work real jobs. To me, the Left was screechy drama. /3

Okay, I guess I have to do this the old-fashioned, multi-tweet way.
I don't care, very much, about who Biden picks as a VP, but some basic sense here:

1. Choose a VP who does you no harm. Most won't help you much. Be safe.

2. All states are not in play. This was Hillary's mistake, thinking that she was going to crush Trump and get 350+ EVs. She spent money and effort in the wrong places. Her VP pick was good. But Biden shouldn't listen to the "we can win Georgia!" talk.

3. Ticket balancing is fine. Everyone does it. It's helpful. But don't be incredibly obvious about it. If your VP is there to check a box of color or gender - like, say, Palin - you could have an unpleasant surprise.

4. Pick someone the candidate likes. That helps.

Or maybe there's another reaction that even people of faith who pray every day - I am one of them - might have to this, which is that a meeting in a U.S. government office to deal with a virus is not an opportunity for a public prayer photo-op. /1
I am a person of faith. But if I were asked to assemble the team of the best I could find to handle a crisis, I would not assume all of them are people of faith, nor would I assume that the people of faith among us are of *my* faith. I wouldn't begin a USG meeting this way. /2
And yet, I would be glad to know that my national leaders are people who seek God's guidance and who pray regularly. I just would feel better about their sincerity if it were in private and not staged as a group photo-op. That's using prayer as public relations. Yuck. /3x

Tied up speaking all weekend, & late to the game catching up on all the John MacArthur hot takes. Historically, I’ve not engaged him for the precise same reason I do not debate flat earthers: even responding to his words feels potentially dignifying to work deserving of none.
That said, I am who I am today b/c powerful Pentecostal women preachers shaped my life early, starting w/Sister Margaret Gaines. I’m filled with ache missing her voice right now. So I’ll be your huckleberry on this one—b/c this is one of the few things I’ll have a bar fight over.
First off—John MacArthur is NOT a scholar. If you went to a college that even accepted him as a source for a paper—I feel bad for you, son. I’m all for take the meat & throw out bones, but racism & misogyny have never been peripheral features of his project...but driving energy.

Given recent news about prosecuting people across the UK for surviving suicide attempts, it's worth considering whether and when (if ever) clinical psychologists, psychiatrists and psychiatric nurses should endorse, encourage or incite prosecution as a clinical decision
Firstly it is worth starting with the codes of ethics & conduct

Clinical psychologists: "Promote & protect the interests of service users & carers"

Psychiatrists: "Make the care of your patient your first concern"

Psychiatric nurses: "Prioritise people"
Next, frame the question. Decisions to charge are made by police. Decisions to prosecute by the Crown Office & Procurator Fiscal Service, the Public Prosecution Service or the Crown Prosecution Service. Psychologists, psychiatrists & nurses can encourage or dissuade prosecution
