The world of music has lost one of the greatest of all time.

Philadelphia has lost a native born legend.

A family has lost a brother, father, husband, uncle.

Rest In Paradise McCoy Tyner. Your legacy and impact has made this world a better place. Thank you so much 🙏
Here are some of my favorite works that McCoy played on. Let's start with the lead song off his 1967 "The Real McCoy" album, "Passion Dance". As a kid I use to listen to this song incessantly

A later work of his from 1981 which finds him playing alongside the great Bobby Hutcherson - this is "Walk Spirit, Talk Spirit"

How his playing could be so complex and yet so sublime, which I hear in "Ebony Queen" from 1972

A nod to his years with Coltrane when he recorded this version of "Impressions" in 1975 - which of course has a very recognizable baseline used by Black Sheep's "The Choice Is Yours" remix. This whole song is an exercise in POWER

I have to go to a lunch meeting so I will continue this thread in a little bit, and at that time we can really dive into McCoy's work as the piano player of the John Coltrane Quartet. That deserves it's own special acknowledgement
Back from my meeting.

Growing up my mom would play "Afro Blue" (on cassette) in the house and it became a song I would return to over and over again (the Coltrane version I knew way before I ever heard of Mongo Santamaria). I still return to this song to this day. This day.
There's something about this melody that's forever etched into my brain that I could probably sing every melody by heart. But it's McCoy's piano that really propels this tune to me, and that definitely makes me think about his impact.

The menacing piano that comes in at 22 seconds from the start of "Africa" which sets this underlying tension, in the majesty that is "Africa" fuck this one is fucking me up haha

Here's an album my mom gave to me when I first started collecting records. I think this is a beautiful song that shows just how special the tandem of McCoy and Jimmy Garrison was

Okay I'm listening to Acknowledgement now and also crying at this point because it's actually one of the greatest moments in the history of humanity. Thank you McCoy

Another one from Africa/Brass (I love orchestrated stuff - like I'm a big Sketches Of Spain fanboy haha) but this one is timeless

Live video of the Classic Quartet doing Alabama wow this is hard body
