We have Republicans who are advocating for the national popular vote. Don’t be duped. With the national popular vote the President would be determined by the large cities. Small cities and rural communities would not even really need to vote.
But what the popular vote doesn’t have are rules of any kind. Therefore the presidential Candace would be open to any one literally. The two party system would still go at it. But if we were using that system today and include the candidates that dropped out as party unaffiliated
it could have some very interesting results.

Total popular votes: 147m

Trump 63m
Biden 30m

These are unaffiliated:
Sanders 25m popular votes

My mentions are blowing up with debates about the Electoral College. For those who attach some sort of reverence to it based on “what the founders” said, let me note that of the 17 amends ratified after the Bill of Rights, FIVE CHANGED SOME ASPECT OF PRES ELECTIONS. 1/
Under the orig Constitution, the person with the most EC votes became Pres; the runner-up became Veep. So...Pres Trump and VP Clinton?? A handful of elections were enuf to show stupidity of that idea. The 12th A (1804) provided for Pres and VP to run as a ticket. 2/
The 20th A (1932) changed the start/ end dates of presidential terms. Constit originally made term start on March 4. 20th A changed it to Jan. 20. What made sense in days before phones/telegraph became a prob when communication and travel improved. 3/

Republicans are doing a lousy job defending the electoral system,which is a system created to allow a union of STATES elect a president.The college of electors is not as important as the SYSTEM of each state receiving a number of electoral votes equal to Congresspeople & Senators
for example. the State of California has 53 United States Congressional districts which do NOT cross state lines, plus it has 2 United States Senators....so it gets 55 electoral votes....based on population. We have an electoral system because we are a union of STATES
It is the STATES which elect the president, as each state casts its electoral votes for the candidate who won the popular vote in that state. or in districts of the state. Some states split their electoral votes by Congressional district to district basis.
