For weeks, thousands of flu samples sat in Seattle as researchers sought to test and flag them for coronavirus. The C.D.C. wouldn’t allow it.

When testing did happen, it was too late. The virus was upon us.

Emails and interviews show that after the weeks of C.D.C. rejections, researchers in Seattle decided to defy regulators and test anyway. They ended up finding and reporting the first case of community-transmission in the region.

By that point, we now know, the virus had already spread undetected. Two people had already died. A nursing home now linked to 19 deaths hadn’t yet learned that their sickness troubles were coronavirus.

The decision not to tap the existing flu study for monitoring was just one in a series of missed chances by the federal government during the early days of the outbreak, when containment would have been easier.

I recently came across a striking test case for laws designed to take guns from dangerous people.

The man had posted:
“i will shoot any woman any time for any reason”
“Kill all women”
A photo of himself with rifles: “one ticket for joker please”

Police initially won an order to take his weapons, seizing three rifles and three handguns. But the man went to court and testified the online messages were jokes. A judge ordered the guns returned.

There are similarly difficult cases happening around the country...

In Florida, a man who praised mass shooters online indicated an openness to shooting at one of his former schools, authorities said.

They blocked him from buying guns. A judge restored the right after his attorney contended that his comments weren’t a credible threat.

After being down EIGHT POINTS on election night, Seattle's socialist councilmember, Kshama Sawant, is winning later ballots by such a large margin that she's moved ahead.

What a remarkable rebuke to Amazon's effort to alter the council.
The top four candidates backed by the Amazon/business spending (Wills, Pugel, Orion, Tavel) are now all on track to lose.

I think we can see which of Seattle’s sometimes-competing identities is emerging with the most power...

Heidi Wills was the recipient of the most biz support and a total of $800,000 in PAC expenditures. That will end up being about $40 per vote Wills receives.

She is now on track to lose that race by double digits. Unreal.

The main far-right event is 2 hours away, but I've already encountered a half-dozen people from the Three Percenters militia group. They have helmets and body armor.

One says they are here to "protect" people. Another has a visible pocket knife and pepper spray.

While the CDC failed to provide working #COVID19 tests, private and university clinical labs, which typically can develop their own tests, were frustrated about the SLOWNESS of the FDA as they prepped applications for emergency approvals from FDA for their #coronavirus tests.🤬
This is damning. While the Trump Administration LIED that there would be 1 million tests last week, instead there were countless untested samples in the “hot zone” of #Seattle that could have been tested EARLY, but were BLOCKED.

How many people were infected because of this⁉️

Swine flu killed 12,469 people in the US from mid 2009 to mid 2010. Do you recall market meltdowns and OMG coverage of it daily? I don't. Globally a few hundred thousand people died. 2009 was the start of an economic recovery yet now we are potentially having an economic plunge.
Swine Flu killed on average 34 people a day from April 2009 to April 2010 per the CDC. Basically, three days of Swine Flu had more DEATHS than the total current #CoronaVirus cases in the US. Can Corona get worse than current levels? Sure but it is not anywhere close to it.
Coronavirus is not anywhere close to Swine Flu levels so I am not sure why people are spreading panic about it. Even if it reaches those levels, there was no OMG WE ARE DYING tone in mid 2009 during Swine. The economy in fact got out of a recession mid 2009 despite Swine Flu!

The media is comparing #coronavirus to the flu and saying that we shouldn't be worried because it has a 2% mortality rate or it only kills the elderly. I want to briefly address how looking at the outbreak in these terms is missing the real danger 1/15

The main risk of the coronavirus outbreak isn’t that you’re going to die, it’s that so many people are going to get sick so quickly that our healthcare services are going to be overwhelmed.

The virus is highly infectious, potentially nearly twice as infectious as the flu. 2/15
We're told the number of cases in the west is tiny. But many of our countries have only just started testing people with pneumonia-like symptoms.

Infected people can spread the virus for up to two weeks before showing symptoms.

Some people don’t show any symptoms at all.
