Earlier today I made the decision to begin a regimen of extreme social distancing. While I am very, very healthy, I am at risk due to my age. Marcy is a few years younger, but is asthmatic and is on immunosuppressant drugs for rheumatoid arthritis. 1/12
For days I’ve been listening to official advice that we should avoid people who are sick (well...duh!!), avoid crowds, and don’t go on cruises. 🙄 2/12
Meanwhile our state is reporting zero infections, but our area is host to a major international air transport hub, two large research universities, a huge manufacturing sector with strong European and Asian ties and major Asian and Middle Eastern populations. 3/12
We know official Federal health and scientific authorities are being forced to withhold information from Americans. 4/12
We have gotten some idea of what is coming for all of us from health care professionals reporting from Northern Italy and Washington State. This information drives home the importance...5/12
of mitigation steps to “flatten the curve” thus keeping the frequency of critical cases from overwhelming the health care system.6/12
As people at risk, we need to protect ourselves from exposure to this virus.
Our susceptibility means that if we allow ourselves to become sick, we are more likely to take up limited resources for treatment - oxygen, ventilators, staff. 7/12
If you are demographically or medically high-risk, *and* if you can afford to do so (you’re retired or can work remotely)...

There is NO REASON under these circumstances to be out anywhere, traipsing around, trying to pick up an infection...

STAY THE FUCK HOME!!

Leave your home only when absolutely necessary, and be creative about “absolutely necessary”. And of course follow all the usual precautions about touching surfaces, getting too close to others, touching your face. Scrub hands after returning home.

I can’t believe that I have seen no authority tell us to do this. We need to keep out of the healthcare system, both for our benefit and for the good of our communities!!

PS1 - Marcy and I have gone through and cancelled every social engagement we have on our calendars. I have one Dr appt next week that I’m keeping. I’m going to discuss remote instruction with my music teacher on Thursday.
PS2 - We have enough food & household supplies that we probably won’t need to shop for at least a couple of weeks, and can probably get our kids to do that. I could also reach out to a neighbor.
PS3 - Sadly, we have tickets to some offerings at the Detroit Film Theater that will probably go unused. A few minutes ago @GovWhitmer announced the first two confirmed Covid-19 cases *and* declared a State Of Emergency, so maybe they’ll be rescheduled 🤷‍♂️
