I’ve been tracking @VUMChealth’s response to #COVID19 carefully. They’ve been slowly escalating their response and communicating consistently with staff.

With this announcement, it’s clear that @MetroNashville needs to follow suit.
We need to understand on a department-by-department basis what happens if a Metro employee tests positive for #COVID19.

What happens if a firefighter or police officer contracts it? Or a librarian or paving manager?

When do we move to an essential services posture?
We need to understand what payroll and scheduling look like for Metro employees.

But we also need to be giving regular, authoritative guidance to the general public of Nashville.
I’m at the point where I believe, based on the evidence this needs to quickly extend beyond “wash your hands,” “bump elbows,” and “don’t touch your face.”

We need a reference standard for pubic gatherings, both publicly operated and privately.
We need to understand how vulnerable populations—already devastated by #NashvilleTornado—will stave off further food insecurity.

For too many families, @MetroSchools is nutrition as a foundation for pedagogy.
At a minimum, public employees who are also public school parents need to understand what to do about childcare.

Ideally, the private sector needs to be engaged to ensure that time off for covering childcare will be factored into a citywide employment/economic strategy.
Bottom line: we need to quickly move to a point where the overall Metro response to #coronavirus is clearly distinguishable from inaction to members of the general public, as all available evidence points to increasingly significant changes coming soon.
(To be clear: I’m confident work has been done to plan and prepare for #coronavirus, but that needs to be communicated thoroughly and quickly both to #MetroCouncil and the general public.)
