I’ve been doing the #WorkFromHome things for a decade now so thought I’d throw my tips and tricks into the fray in a thread. I’ve got chunks of time between interviews today so I’ll update as I go!
Tip 1: Set an alarm. The temptation to sleep in is strong and it will destroy your productivity. Keep to a schedule. I’m up and working by 7am most days. (Of course, after a bad sleep you can definitely push that an hour!) #WorkFromHome
Tip 2: Get dressed. Again, the temptation to stay in pjs is strong and will kill productivity! Get dressed, brush your teeth (obviously!) and wash your face. Even if it’s leggings and a tshirt, clean clothes will feel rejuvenating. #WorkFromHome
Tip 3: Honestly, sometimes background TV is a great way to feel less isolated. But make sure it’s a show you’ve seen a million times so you don’t actually watch. Like Frasier. It’s gotta be white noise, not something that will pull your away. #WorkFromHome
Tip 4: Take brain breaks. Get up and do something to clear your head, and when you’re home chores are great because your brain break doubles as cleaning! Fold laundry, do dishes, cook a meal. You’ll feel better for the break AND the cleanliness! #WorkFromHome
Tip 5: Have a pet. Ok, obviously not an option for everyone but I wanted an excuse to post a Pete pic. Petermission, if you will. #WorkFromHome
Tip 6: Stay off social media, which I recognized is dumb to say as I tweet things for people to read. But it’s a time suck. Post what you need to post and close it. Your sanity will thank you. #WorkFromHome
Tip 7: Cook real food! Seriously. This is a great excuse to eat better. Take a brain break and make a salad. #WorkFromHome
Tip 8: Work out. Can’t go to the gym? Stretch in your living room. So some yoga. Use a foam roller if you have one. Our bodies aren’t meant to be sedentary, so get up and move periodically. #WorkFromHome
Tip 9: If you can, create a designated work space. The mental separation of work space and living space is key. #WorkFromHome
Tip 10: Have another Pete pic! #WorkFromHome
Tip 11: NAP! Yeah, it’s the best. But only for like 20 minutes. When you start to feel so tired you can’t focus your eyes, take advantage of being at home to give in and nap quickly. The power nap will energize you, especially if you have coffee first. #WorkFromHome
Tip 12: Get some air. Go outside if you have a yard. Open a window. Whatever you’re comfortable with right now just get some fresh air and sunlight! Bonus exercise if you can go for a bit of a walk, too! #WorkFromHome
Tip 13: Close messaging apps. You’re home, but you’re also at work. Do what you need to focus and minimize distractions so you can get your stuff done. #WorkFromHome
Tip 14: Don’t work all day! This is something I’m *really* bad at... make sure you have time I’m the evening to rest and recover mentally. I let this happen naturally. When you feel yourself becoming super inefficient, that’s usually quittin’ time. #WorkFromHome
Tip 15: Avoid the temptation of working in bed. Trust me. The longer you have to work from home, the more important it'll be to keep your sleep space clean. #WorkFromHome
Tip 16: Stretch. This is important so saying it again. Stretch your hip flexors, piriformis, and thoracic spine. As someone with hip and back problems, learn from my pain! Here's a good article with some stretch positions: nbcnews.com/better/lifesty… #WorkFromHome
Tip 17: Get a desk cat. Hiss-yawns will keep you on task! #WorkFromHome #quarantinecats
Tip 18a: Set a schedule that brings variety to your day as much as possible. For example: today I had a bunch of calls and researching/writing a blog/pulling images for the video b-roll. I plan to record tomorrow. #WorkFromHome
Tip 18b: Allow yourself flexibility in your schedule! If you didn’t get through as much as you wanted, don’t work to midnight tonight finish. Example: I wanted to record a new video tonight but I’m too tired so planning to do it first thing tomorrow. #WorkFromHome
