One of the things the coiner of the term "metamodernism" (Mas'ud Zavarzadeh) presaged in his 1975 essay "The Apocalyptic Fact and the Eclipse of American Fiction" was the seamless juxtaposition of fact and fiction in service of fact; that's what @tooningout appears to want to do.
PS/ To be clear, Zavarzadeh wasn't referring to "fiction" in the sense of "lies"—but rather using framing devices common in fiction to present accurate information. @tooningout uses real footage and real people *framed* via cartoon narratives to issue serious political critiques.
PS2/ I realize that when I've written about metamodernism on Twitter in the past, certain militantly uneducated folks on the right—and even few snarks on the left—have misread "fiction" as meaning "lies," when in literary craft it simply refers to a series of narrative *devices*.
PS3/ One of the things I've learned in teaching digital journalism to zoomers is that they're not as concerned with "objectivity"—one of the 4 OATH principles—as "transparency." IOW they'd say that @tooningout works for them because the cartoon elements are transparently fictive.
