Yesterday, my Little & I biked around @CNUcaptains campus as we have often done over the past fews years, esp early in the spring, w the flowers in bloom & no heat to make me miserable. It was, at it always has been, beautiful, bc the campus, almost all of it, is younger than me
Not "ghost tree" (which is what my Little calls this tree- my personal fav thing on campus) but most everything else. And though he & I have biked an empty campus many times, through spring breaks, etc, yesterday was diff, bc it was a Tues at the peak of spring semester, & the
absence of the campus community was literally palatable. Of course, I was feeling esp sensitive to it, knowing I'll be departing this summer when for a long time I thought I'd spend a career there. But even beyond that, there was an undeniable sense of loss that was well beyond
my own on campus, & although I am conscious of the many people who suffer far worse setbacks & injustices than colleges seniors robbed of their senior experiences, its still a bummer that so many of the students I have cared for have had an experience that is pretty heightened w
pomp & circumstance at CNU stolen from them, an experience that can never be replaced. And despite that fact of my own own hurt feelings it pleased me to see our uni prez realized & acknowledge that loss in the email he sent informing us that the rest of the semester will have
to be carried out online. Its a sad way to end my 5 years at CNU. I ended up w just 1 physical teaching day to say goodbye to teaching & to my students. With the track I'm on, I don't see a return to university teaching in my future & dammit, I was good at it. I am happy to see
uni is adopting something I wanted to see them adopt w was more pass/fail options for our students, many of whom are facing severe anxiety in the circumstances we're in. I'd have liked to have seen a full adoption of pass/fail, but at least the uni is adding 2 more pass/fail
classes for students to draw on. Anyway, its such an surreal way to end my CNU career- teaching remotely, disjointed courses that are a far cry from the way I originally designed them.
Oops here is ghost tree!
