THREAD// I'm teaming up with @SenatorBennet, @corybooker and @SenSherrodBrown on a plan to provide Americans with direct cash payments to help them cope with the economic fallout of COVID-19. Here's what that means. 
2/ Instead of bailing out industries, we need to put money in workers' pockets. That's why we propose sending payments quarterly and directly to families. The first payment would be $2,000 per American to account for the immediacy of the shock.
3/ Payment amounts would decrease over time, with the duration tied to economic triggers. Payments will only completely shut off after unemployment drops back down to levels on par with those before the Coronavirus-induced economic damage.
4/ To be clear, this isn't the only solution we need. These payments should be part of a larger package that also includes beefed-up unemployment insurance, targeted assistance for caregivers and health care workers, and even more generous paid leave.
5/ People are already having their hours cut, losing their jobs and worrying about their small businesses going under. We need to help American workers and families who need it most. We can do it by putting money in their pockets right now.
