My doctor just confirmed my having a mild case of #COVID19 (“high probability”). The reason why San Francisco only has 51 official cases is because there’s only capacity to test severe cases. I don’t qualify for testing. Our national number is much higher than the reported one.
I’m fine. However, not being able to be tested because of a mild case means I won’t show up in the statistics. Most people who have #COVID19 therefore won’t show up in the statistics. So, ACT AS IF YOU HAVE IT. Wash your hands. Keep your distance. Clean surfaces.

I can personally expect about three more days of symptoms. My doctor is having me tack-on an extra three days or quarantine to be safe (but all of San Francisco is in quarantine for at least two more weeks).

I’M FINE, but this is our public health. Take precautions for others.
I’m stocked up on groceries. Friends are checking in (remotely). I’m good. Don’t worry about me.

Worry about all of us. I’m isolating myself because I love those around me. I’m gonna be resting, working, and watching a lot of @GraceandFrankie.

I’m still processing yesterday afternoon with @jtknoxroxs and her amazing son Knox. I don’t even know where to start. So much goodness. So, I’ll start a thread...
First, it was just great to sit next to a seven year old autistic boy and just talk and play. I instantly recognized myself in Knox. I was a quiet and recluse kid. Knox is joyous and bubbly and very engaging. Yet, I saw the shared underpinnings in his and my childhoods.
I’m still dwelling on the little things - like how he approached toys, how he moved his hands, how he communicated and received information. I just felt this wave of happiness overcome me as I thought “Oh, wow. I so get you, kid.”

Here’s 14 minutes of @AndrewYang talking about autism from the lense if family members and support professionals as if autistic people aren’t sentient beings or voters ourselves.

I’m so over this sh*t.

This is AFTER his campaign caught flack for doing the same thing in the most recent Democratic presidential debate.

In this clip, he also equates non-verbal autistic people with people unable to work and says “autistic children often grow up to become autistic adults.” Often?
Yes, those could be slips of the tongue, and I don’t want to play “gotcha” here. However, @AndrewYang often touts his status as a parent of an autistic child on the campaign trail. It’s not too much to ask that he pause to engage and center autistic people in anything about us.

ABA assumes the internal thinking of an animal/person largely can’t be known. Marginalizing autistic voices is key to the ABA industry. Once centered, the practice falls apart.

Behaviorism itself is not bad. It’s a largely outdated field rejected by most psychologists, but we’ve gained insights from it.
Behaviorism (with caveats) largely started as a practice to understand animal intelligence. The basic premise (I’m oversimplifying) was that, since we can’t know what animals are thinking, we can observe their behavior to determine their intelligence and skill ability.

This is the kind of attitude that gets people killed.

Here is how I explained it to my nine year old:

Ebola and other plagues are usually easy to catch and stop. They are deadly, but that very deadliness makes them stand out. We spot them. We stop them.

#COVID is different.
#Covid ‘s mildness is the most dangerous aspect of it.

Many people who catch it don’t even experience symptoms.

Children, who cough on everything and never wash their hands CARRY IT WITHOUT SYMPTOMS.

When symptoms do show, they come two weeks later. Two WEEKS.
That means that for every sick person we see and test and hospitalize, there are probably a hundred people walking around feeling just fine, infecting other people who feel just fine, who infect OTHER people who feel JUST FINE.

Then two weeks later... KABOOM

We lost power for like 8 days after hurricane Irma. Our phones only worked sporadically, if at all. On maybe day 3, I drove about 9 miles to a parking lot near a working cell tower. I checked in w/ friends & family, submitted some documents & pictures to insurance companies...

It was all so present. So immediate.

I remember looking at facebook. My local friends feeds were of devastation and largely unsolvable problems, and so, so many questions. While for everyone outside the blast radius, life just goes on. Birthdays and pet pics and memes and life, as it should be.

Finally authorities are putting Mazandaran province on quarantine: only fuel and food trucks are allowed. This late, its effectiveness will be limited.
