Asked why he isn't pulling the trigger re using Defense Production Act, Trump says: "Governors are supposed to be doing a lot of this work...the federal government's not supposed to be out there buying vast amounts of item and then shipping. You know, we're not a shipping clerk."
Trump says the same goes for coronavirus testing -- "the governors are supposed to be doing it," not the federal government.

Asked why he praised China's response and "transparency" on Jan. 24, Trump says, "Because it's true." Reminded he's now saying China wasn't transparent about the virus, he says, "They were transparent at that time."

The FDA has issued a statement clarifying the chloroquine situation. Trump wrongly said the anti-malaria drug was approved for coronavirus. The FDA statement says there is no approved coronavirus treatment. 1/
The FDA says:
- It's working with govt/academic entities already studying chloroquine for coronavirus
- It will continue to grant emergency compassionate use requests for another drug Trump mentioned, remdesivir, "but controlled clinical trials are needed" to test safety 2/
- Hahn:: If chloroquine works for coronavirus, demand will increase; they'll "take all steps" to keep it available to "patients who take it to treat severe and life-threatening illnesses such as lupus.” They want makers to ramp up production to mitigate any supply pressures 3/

Trump says "Big Jim," the governor of West Virginia, must be doing a good job, since the state has no (reported) cases.

(Trump has resisted, alternatively insisting he's already done it and that he'll only do it if absolutely necessary.)

Bottom line: He hasn't *activated* it.
U.S. co's are doing a great job *voluntarily* making masks, gloves, ventilators desperately needed & running in short supply, Trump says.

American Medical Association President told @NBCNews philanthropy is NOT GOING TO CUT IT. Production must sync with pandemic modeling.
Whose job is that?

Trump needs to actually *use* the DPA to compel manufacturers to produce the *right amount* of items needed for the nt'l defense.

This ensures 1) U.S. supply = hospital demand 2) manufacturers can proceed w confidence there will be a market for products.

I think of myself as a rational person. I'm a professor. I live & work in a place where everyone values data, science, evidence. So Im struggling to understand the federal government's slow response to #COVID19. Seems so irrational. Theories please? Genuinely want to understand.
One theory is incompetence at the top. Maybe that's part of it. But shouldn't Trump by now be absolutely scared to death, and therefore ready to listen to those with expertise and competence in his government? (Is that too rational?)
A second theory focuses on trade offs -- taking faster , more aggressive actions in defense of our health now (i.e. #ShelterInPlace, using Defense Production Act ) would produce even greater negative economic consequences. Data in support of this explanation, however, are thin.

Just in case you all haven't noticed, I'm done allowing this panic to spread like another deadly pathogen without pushback.

Everyone in America should be tired of allowing the Chinese and their domestic allies to lead us around on a leash.
