😷 What to say to the cynical — people who say this disease is no worse than car accidents, or the flu, or cancer. They are skeptical as to why we must shut down all economic activity in order to deal with this pandemic.

Unlike flu, or cancer, or car accidents, this disease attacks people on the front lines who have no protection. Healthcare providers.

Car accidents are not contagious. If you treat someone injured in a car accident and save their life, you don’t drive home and get in a car accident yourself as a result. Cancer is not contagious. If you help a patient with chemotherapy or surgery, you do not catch cancer.

As for the flu. Healthcare providers have vaccinations. Furthermore, the Coronavirus is highly contagious.
We expect 40 to 70% of the population to get it. With a 10% mortality rate, given the US population of 330 million, that would be around 15 million deaths.

And that’s why we do the quarantines we are trying. If we just let everybody go about their business, the hospitals would be overwhelmed, could run out of equipment and could shut because there would be not enough nurses or doctors to work in them.

If we can slow the spread and get treatment to people and have just a 1% fatality rate, that is still around 1.5 million people dying. Very serious situation.
