It’s a phenomenon that Fox News uses regularly for effect. They make salacious statements and then walk them back a little knowing the damage is done. (eg the Seth Rich conspiracy theory)

Yes, Fox News is now reversing course and telling something closer to the truth now.
But the damage is done.
The beliefs they seeded in viewers minds may have been discredited... but they will now be persistent.
And people will die before realizing the truth.
