It's Monday so it's time for a rant...love seeing all the articles on #onlinelearning - I'd just like to welcome you all to the party that's been going on for decades - #lrnchat and #guildchat have been great hosts for that party (& tons of others) but HOLY CRAP people....
Let's get some things straight - it's NOT online "learning." That's inaccurate - it's online instruction or training or content or classes but learning takes places where it always has..inside people's heads. Next, all this online work will NOT change the way people learn...
..they will learn the same way they always have and NO learning styles are not useful here. What will change are the ways we construct opportunities for learning to occur. What will change are the levels of access people have to content and tools...
What SHOULD change are how we think about the design of our content. @karlfisch and the work he started on the flipped classroom has never been more relevant. What SHOULD change is thinking about the online world as some direct analogy to the physical.....
..it's not. Stop designing like it is. Time is different. Space is different. We've been able to get by being sloppy and imprecise w terms and vocabulary but we can't afford that now. Let's be precise. Let's be creative. These are trying times but they are also times in which..
..we can choose to embrace these challenges and finally design online experiences that take full advantage of being virtual..and we should work to eliminate the gaps in access and content that are now in sharp relief. /rant
