I have to say I'm really proud of @uw right now. It would be hard to enumerate all the ways this giant public research university and its staff, students, and faculty are helping, but they include developing & deploying Covid-19 tests (@UWVirology) 1/
Debunking misinformation (@katestarbird @CT_Bergstrom), providing context for emergency powers (Hugh Spitzer @UWSchoolofLaw), assessing the efficacy of containment measures (Elizabeth Halloran @UWBiostat), and so much more. 2/
Not to mention the leadership displayed by our alumni @GovInslee (@uw) and @MayorJenny (@UWSchoolofLaw) in responding to the pandemic and communicating with residents here and throughout the country. 3/
But especially I am grateful for the unbelievable staff, students, and faculty and thousands of alumni of @UWMedicine who are truly at the front lines of this crisis both in clinic and in the lab. 4/

Apps that purport to track people infected with COVID-19 are a terrible idea imo for several reasons. Here are five:
1. In areas of low adoption, they will give people a false sense of security and could interfere with critical social distancing measures.
2. In areas of high adoption, coronapps will cause panic---especially if the data is visualized in such a way (e.g., heat maps) that overemphasizes relative densities.
3. The privacy concerns are considerable. To say that there are no privacy concerns because the data is anonymized and encrypted is to fundamentally misunderstand the nature of privacy harms, which are often structural in nature or experienced subjectively.

I can't believe I have to keep saying it's a bad idea to put weapons on security robots 🤦‍♂️
When I was investigating allegations of police misconduct in New York, the NYPD rolled out Tasers. But they only let "white shirts" (sergeants and lieutenants) have them at first, because only experienced officers had the situational awareness to know when to use them.
Even so the police routinely used Tasers on "EDPs"---the name the NYPD used at the time for the mentally ill. Later Taser (now Axon) would specifically warn *not* to use Tasers on people showing signs of mental illness.

@daniellecitron For our paper: "Artificial Intelligence will affect the missions of nearly all executive departments and agencies (agencies)."
What's missing:
1. Any reference to the uneven distribution of AI's costs and benefits, or its disproportionate impact on vulnerable populations.
2. Any clear requirement to reform federal procurement of AI.
3. Any actual new money for AI research.

Wow. I found a donor trying to give >£1m to delivery work in a certain sector. I also found*, and told them, that there's very little evidence about 'what works' in that sector. So they can't reliably fund delivery b/c nobody knows what to deliver. They'd better fund production…
2/ of research about what to deliver (& how). I connected them to some researchers. Now, 3 months later, they're starting a partnership to produce effective #research in that sector.

That entire intervention only took me about 2 hours. Rescued >£1m from almost certain fail.
3/ See: get your philanthro-advice from me: I know my game ;-)

*by using a @3ieNews evidence & gap map. (Which are a public good and hence hard to fund, but useful & consequential.)

"Grifting" (fraud or theft for financial gain) is a crime; accusations of grifting without evidence are libel. Tweeting out such accusations under the @MSNBC imprimatur generates legal liability for @MSNBC. I put up with this for too long; these malicious, false attacks stop now.
@MSNBC I don't have a Patreon; my analyses are offered on Twitter for free. I write books, but I've been doing so for 15 years now. I'm a Newsweek columnist, I teach journalism at a large public research university, and I have never "grifted" in my entire goddamn life. I'm sick of this.
@MSNBC There's been an assumption—for a long time now—that journalists can make false claims of "grifting" (criminal activity) without getting sued by those whose professional reputations they're trying to destroy. That ends now. @MSNBC can take some sort of corrective action, or I can.

Why not just go speak to the Grand Jury? Clearly, it's not about avoiding spending more time talking about the investigation and your experience...
