A close friend of mine today asked me as to what India should do to handle the coronavirus crisis. After our brief conversation, he thought I should write this and tweet. Here are my tweets in series -

Produce more test kits, test more people, and install more hospital beds through PPP. Respect our health workers and follow the needed discipline to flatten the curve & get through this crisis as quickly as possible.

Treat our poor, who will be affected the most, with respect in every community and help them with necessary food, cash, clothing, shelter, etc. We will need personal sacrifices and young leadership to serve all Indians equally.

Request home help like cleaners, cooks, drivers, guards, malis, dhobis, etc. to stay home and pay them a full salary plus other additional support during the lockdown. We will need community awareness and pressure on this.

Take responsibility to pay low-income earners full salary & ensure it is enough to get through the crisis. Work online, hold video conferences & get used to the new normal. #CII @ficci_india, #SME, etc. must lead.

BIG BUSINESSES
Play a more significant role to support the local community with needed food, cash, education and medication. Encourage and empower online workers to create a new work culture.

Announce and immediately deliver reasonable cash directly to people at the bottom of the economic pyramid using Aadhar, digital payment, and valid bank accounts. This can't wait anymore!

So what does it mean and why does it matter?

Some families are being urged to stay at home, while many more are being told to stop shaking hands, sharing food or getting close to each other. It can feel harsh. It’s only natural to express our love with a hug or to stand shoulder to shoulder as we connect with our community.
But for those of us living in an outbreak, one of the most caring things we can do right now is to step back. Because even if we are young and healthy, we know it is all too easy to pass on the virus from person to person until it endangers the most vulnerable among us.

Today my son was cornered at school by kids who wanted to “test” him for #Coronavirus just because he is half-Chinese. They chased him. Scared him. And made him cry.

I was the same age when I was bullied for being Pakistani.

It’s 2020. I thought things had changed by now... 💔
Update: my son is okay. Confused but okay. A Chinese friend and his brother were also targeted.

This morning, we talked about what racism is.

I will talk to the principal. There is hope for education, perspective and compassion. Here’s to making a better world.

She apologized. By then, she had learned of similar incidents in other classes. She immediately informed relevant parties and went to each class in each grade to talk about #racism, #coronavirus, and #compassion. This is leadership in action.
