I talked with US state lawmakers today and shared a few charts about the #coronavirus . Here are some (thread 1/9):

You might remember this chart from a couple of weeks ago, from my article medium.com/@tomaspueyo/co…

Now look at an equivalent chart, but for US States:
Note the Y axis: NY is way worse than SK IT IR at that time. We all know what happened in these countries since. (2/9)

If you remember, 2 weeks ago, I then followed with a zoom in on the countries that appeared too small in comparison with IT IR SK. The point was to show how all these countries were also growing exponentially, and it was a matter of time for them to explode. They did. (3/9)

Now let's do the same exercise with US states:
Note again the Y axis is 2x as big as the previous chart's. These state-level cases are exploding exactly like all these other Western countries. (4/9)

Oh by the way this is the point at which Hubei ordered the lockdown. 13 states are above that line now. (5/9)

Some states are doing the responsible thing and applying the Hammer. But most states are in the exact same situation as European countries were 2 weeks ago: They don't want to overreact, forgetting this is an exponential threat. (6/9)

One of the key measures that European countries used to control the epidemic was shutting down their borders.

Will the US do it too? States might be forced to. If, say, CA is controlling the epidemic but AZ isn't, CA might want to shut their borders with AZ. (7/9)

But Arizonians might circumvent this by going through NV. So CA might be forced to close borders with all states. There is little jurisprudence on this, but from the little I've read this is legal.

The only way to avoid this is a Federal-level measure. If you want this, there's a White House petition requesting exactly that. We already have over 30,000 signatures. Sign the petition now and share this thread so others do it too!
