Since I’m not a VC (and thus am not qualified to opine on epidemiology), I will instead stay in my white dude lane and explain what Sophie’s work does in this thread.

Badly.
Sophie built an interface to a pseudorandom number generator.

Randomness is SUPER important. It's the most important thing in all of cryptography.
Get your mind out of the gutter! He's rolling dice! Dice are GREAT sources of randomness.

But as Einstein observed, neither god nor computers play dice, so this is where Sophie's work comes in.
Computers already have a random number generator, but it's crappy.

Like many Googlers, @SchmiegSophie has a Linux/Unix background.

Ergo, she's built an interface to something better, the 'sudo random number' generator. Sudo always makes things better, and this is no exception.
Ergo, the linked code is how you write "sudo cat /dev/random" in Go. Golang is super weird, which is why it looks completely different from that, but Googlers gonna Google.

And that's what @SchmiegSophie built, as explained by me, an overconfident Twitter rando.
