Frankfurt scientists note that many Covid 19 patients have heart damage long after their illness has ended. The severity of the course is not critical, and younger people are also affected.
A new study by Frankfurt University in Frankfurt has found that Covid-19 can lead to permanent heart damage in many patients. Out of 100 people examined, the team led by Valentina Puntmann found 78 pathological changes in the heart, 60 of them had myocarditis.
The examinations took place on average 71 days after the Covid 19 diagnosis. It is remarkable that it obviously does not matter how severe the course of the disease was. 67 of the patients had mild symptoms and cured at home.
It is also unlikely to predominantly affect elderly people, and previous illnesses may also not be a prerequisite for heart damage caused by Covid-19. The patients examined were between 45 and 53 years old, and only a few of them had high blood pressure,
diabetes or narrowed heart vessels before infection. The scientists suspect that the heart damage is not caused directly by the virus, but is caused by inflammation as a result of the disease.
Puntmann and her team point out that further research is needed to determine the long-term consequences. Among other things, her study is not meaningful for younger people, patients with Covid 19 disease or those who have a completely asymptomatic course.
