EU citizens with previous convictions could be turned away at the UK border after the end of the Brexit transition period. This emerges from plans by the British Home Office that have now become known in London.
Specifically, those citizens from the European Union who have spent more than a year in prison or who have committed a crime in the past twelve months are to be denied entry.
However, without an agreement with the EU, Great Britain could have problems checking the criminal history of EU citizens because this would require access to EU databases. This means that even those who have been sentenced to less than a year in prison could be turned away.
At the moment it has to be proven that an EU citizen poses a real threat to the general public in order to refuse entry. The British Home Secretary had recently announced new migration laws, which should also restrict the illegal entry of migrants.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro on Thursday visited Health Minister General Eduardo Pazuello, who has COVID-19, and made his point that the disease is easy to recover quickly from with the help of the controversial drug chloroquine.
The two men chatted and joked without wearing masks in Pazuello's hotel room, seen in a video posted on social media by the president, who recovered from a bout of COVID-19 in July.
"This is another concrete case of someone who took chloroquine and it worked," Bolsonaro said. "This is an alternative, when doctors prescribe it."
