Germany’s administrative courts continue to correct thousands of negative asylum notices from the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (Bamf). This emerges from the Office's recently published figures on lawsuits in the first half of 2020.
Accordingly, 15.2 percent of the court decisions in this period resulted in the correction of the defendant asylum decision - and brought the person seeking protection, instead of a rejection, refugee protection.
Or at least a ban on deportation. 36 percent of the decisions complained about were confirmed by the courts, while the remaining 49 percent were “other litigation”.
The judicial "annulment rate" of Bamf notices has risen slightly again - after it had always fallen in previous years: From 22 percent in 2017 to 17.1 in 2018 and 14.5 percent in 2019. A spokeswoman for Bamf explained the
increase in response to inquiries, with the fact that in the defendant, "mostly more than two years old" asylum decisions, Corona had "no role" - but it did in the current court decisions.
The Bamf made almost 79,000 decisions on asylum applications in the first half of 2020. More than 47,000 of these decisions were negative. Around 74 percent of these were contested in court. Courts made 63,309 decisions on Bamf notices during this time:
They confirmed 22,860 and corrected 9,644 defendant decisions of the Bamf. 30 805 lawsuits ended as "other proceedings".

Turkey announced that it had extended the seismic survey work of its ship Oruc Reis in the disputed area of the eastern Mediterranean until 4 November, taking a step towards increasing the region's tensions.
NATO members Turkey and Greece are locked in a dispute over the size of their continental shelves and competing claims in the eastern Mediterranean for hydrocarbon resources. When Turkey sent Oruc Reis into waters also claimed by Greece and Cyprus, the row erupted in August.
Together with two other ships, Ataman and Cengiz Han, Oruc Reis will continue to operate until Nov. 4 in the region south of the Greek island of Rhodes, a Turkish naval maritime notice said late on Saturday. A prior notice scheduled survey work until Oct. 27 in the region.
