Between, #Trump, #COVID19 and other disasters, it has been all to easy to miss the series of climate catastrophes that accumulated around the world in 2020.
It is a shocking list 👇 that most missed in the noise
Please keep #ClimateAction in the forefront - for food, for life
Ukraine- 'lost 570,000 ha of winter crops due to prolonged droughts & unusually intense spring frosts. Further droughts during the spring & summer seasons resulted in additional losses including 200,000 ha of corn & lower crop yields across the country' bit.ly/39lZm9O
“Climate change is really having adverse effect on agricultural production in Nigeria. The recent effect on agriculture is ... almost two months without rains in the South-west & North-central zones. This definitely affected food production”
'in the past 10-15 years, more frequent and prolonged dry spells have severely disrupted the farming calendar... The diverse impacts of climate change have over the years severely affected the economy of Sierra Leone'
'The climate crisis has also already led to changes for some of Japan’s most important agricultural products —first & foremost, rice...
Storms can also bring devastation to farmers, as when Typhoon Hagibis caused damage totalling ¥102 billion to crops' bit.ly/2LFGeM8
"Climate change in recent years has made winters drier and prolonged cold temperatures throughout the spring season' in Europe, 'these changes have negatively affected agricultural production throughout Europe, including Albania'
#SouthAfrica-
'After years of drought, and massive fires last year, farmers in the north-western part of the Free State saw widespread flooding in the first weeks of 2021... Some farmers have lost their houses, and much of their plantings, in the floods'
#Ethiopia-
"The 3 lethal Cs -conflict, coronavirus & climate change- have pushed millions of Ethiopians in Tigray to the brink. Even before the conflict, people had lost up to half their crops due to climate-fuelled plagues of locusts" #ClimateEmergency bit.ly/3sKyitE
Mozambique-
'Nearly 7,000 people forced from their homes and more than 130,000 hectares of crops destroyed by torrential downpours and floods.'
“Families are in urgent need of essential supplies like food, water, blankets and shelter”
'Large areas of farmland were once again left under water this week as heavy rain caused swollen rivers & watercourses to burst their banks... Longer term, winters are forecast to become warmer & up to 30% wetter as a result of climate change.'
'From 2012-2015, there was almost no rain, & since 2011 there have been extreme & prolonged droughts throughout the Wayuu territory...[with] impacts on water availability & the well-being of wildlife, livestock, agriculture & the local populace' weavenews.org/stories/2021/1…

'After years in a row of global climate “anomalies" & lower than expected crop production, it seems prudent to reinforce preparations, in 2021 & beyond, to manage for these new climate and production norms and the anomalies that will develop from here on'
“The connection between the sources of local air pollution and the emissions that drive climate change is very clear.’ (bit.ly/2H5xSe5)”
&
“The evidence is clear: air pollution has a devastating impact on children’s health” bit.ly/2DNev5q
*A thread*
Fossil fuel pollution poisons our children.
By delaying climate action, world leaders are not only destabilizing the climate, but are also willfully ignoring a huge body of evidence on extreme health impacts of fossil fuel pollution.
Peer reviewed science details this clearly.
First, some general observations:
“The main environmental cause of childhood mortality and morbidity around the world is related to air pollution” bit.ly/3dzPew0
Droughts are currently having widespread impacts around the world.
E.g. in Thailand
“Many rice mills are refusing to sell due to uncertainty over supply during this dry season" ..."Many parts of the country’s rice growing area have been hit by drought"
Drought in Africa, Southern Europe Threatens Durum Crops
"deterioration of rainfall in late January and February and exceptionally high temperatures in February have caused low planted areas and low crop performance”
The #ClimateCrisis, buried in aggregate economic indicators:
A spike in inflation in #India "caused by food prices...a sharp rise in the price of vegetables... pulses... attributed to supply shocks caused largely by extreme weather events"
"It is well-known that vegetable prices wrere going up rapidly in the last few months...The main reason for this is the climate anomalies...some crops were completely destroyed"
