Another very late start for the daily #Covid19 thread.
I have been keeping an eye on things in among my tennis commentary from the Qatar Open tennis.
The only story in the #UK is confirmation of an end to self isolation requirement from Thursday.

Free testing will end on 1 April
#Covid19 cases in Scotland are UP today while the slowing of falling numbers continues in the rest of the #UK

The nationwide fall is only 7.8% with 38,409 registered new infections.

#England 29,753 (-6.9%)
#NIreland 2,235 (-9.3%)
#Scotland 5,307 (+3.7%)
#Wales 1,114 (-47%)
The rest of the day's #Covid19 stats of interest later. Need to get home, eat, follow Ukraine story.
My friends and colleagues there are getting very nervous now.
#Germany still very slowly reducing #Covid19 in the country.

105,542 new infections registered today, an 11% fall compared with last Monday.
143 deaths
A surprise rise in new #Covid19 cases in #Turkey today.

85,026 new cases, that's 11% higher than last Momday. It's Turkey's first increase since its infection rate peaked 13 days ago.

268 more Covid deaths.
#HongKong registered another all-time daily record today.

7,533 new cases of #Covid19 almost a quarter higher than the previous worst day for cases.
12 further deaths.
#Greece hoping that it's back on track in the battle vs #Covid19.

Another moderate fall in new cases today, of around 11% to 18,088
Also a further 90 deaths.
A near 45% increase for #Finland today.
17,671 new cases of #Covid19 reported today, covering the whole weekend.
#Iceland's been one of the worst affected by a second peak in the current wave and #Covid19 still heading up quite sharply.

2,393 more cases reported for the weekend, 500 above this time last week.
1/2
#Denmark's still causing concern.
The number of #Covid19 patients in ICU is perhaps the most accurate guide to the situation in a country.

That figure is up 10% again today from 40 to 44, while Covid cases in Danish hospitals up 8% to 1,717 (the usual post weekend increase)
2/2

Today only a slight fall in new #Covid19 cases in #Denmark. 28,883 positive tests in the last 24 hours, around 600 lower than a week ago.

The death toll today is 29, which is down 12 from last Monday.
#Norway's case numbers are irrelevant due to severe cutback on testing. It's a real shame because #Covid19 hospital numbers are continuing to rise, and most alarmingly ICU figures are up again today

63 Covid sufferers in ICU (+17% since Friday)
509 total patients (+15%)
Wow, actually I've just got the testing data for #Norway released a few minutes ago and despite the cutbacks, new #Covid19 cases are UP!

14,879 new infections, 821 higher than this time last week (+6%)

Here is the #Covid19 round up for Wednesday. All the facts which matter in one handy thread.

Starting with the recently published #UK figures which show a surprisingly large fall in cases, bucking the recent trend of smaller reductions...
Wednesday is usually the day with the highest newly reported #Covid19 cases in the #UK, but numbers are down today, indeed by 27%.

However, I believe it's probably a blip and we may see higher numbers tomorrow and/or Friday.

But Covid deaths continue to fall. From 199 to 164
Looking at new #Covid19 cases by country within the #UK, good to see Scotland falling again.

#England 29,703 (-30.5%)
#NIreland 2,294 (-20.6%)
#Scotland 6,756 (-9.3%)
#Wales 903(-19.7%)

Now confirmed. State of Emergency declared in #Ukraine.
More details later...
Govt pledging most citizens won't be unduly affected
Secretary of the Defense Council Oleksiy Danilov says "it can be restricting traffic, additional transport checks, documents checks. These issues are preventive, so that the country remains calm."

#Ukraine's parliament has ratified the State of Emergency.

It is effective for 30 days from tonight.

Tuesday's #Covid19 thread starts here. The arguments still raging in the #UK about "Living with Covid" following the announcement from the govt. that infected people no need to isolate from Thursday.

All the important data and news updated in this thread throughout the day
However I am commentating on tennis again today; 3 matches, long day.

I do try to reply all your queries but @SimonCalder here answers many that I'm repeatedly asked, using his judgement on the regular Q "when will xxxxland drop testing requirements?"

#UK's figures today show another slowdown in the falling numbers with only 6.6% fewer new #Covid19 cases than at this time last week.

And big differences in the different countries:
#England 30,080 (-17.5%)
#NIreland 2,951 (-1.2%)
#Scotland 6,427 (+10.7%)
#Wales 1,672 (+81%)

Not happened yet, but I will be very surprised if Russian tanks are not on Ukrainian territory by the morning. Initially in Donbas territories.

A few more made up "atrocities" or staged attacks will be broadcast by 21st century Lord Haw Haws and then a hot war on the frontline.
My guess is #Ukraine's forces are likely to be pushed back beyond the current frontline, which has been frozen for years. I doubt it will extend to Odesa, Kharkiv or even Mariupol' yet.
It will be symbolic advance, a few small villages, maybe Slovyansk.
I've not been wrong so far
President @ZelenskyyUa is to address the nation

Wednesday's #Covid19 megathread makes an early start as there's so much news to bring you!

#Omicron takes centre stage in Europe with a raft of records (recap coming up), but #UK ministers are increasingly confident the NHS won't be swamped despite England's lack of restrictions
It turned out to be a terrible Tuesday, not just in #UK, which was just one of TEN European countries to hit all time high daily #Covid19 infection numbers.

#Cyprus #France #Greece #Iceland #Italy #Malta #Montenegro #Portugal and #Spain the others to set new records.
Concern in #Norway. The #Omicron wave looked to be beyond the peak; is it making a comeback or is it still delayed Christmas cases?
4,702 new #Covid19 infections, fewer than 100 down on last Weds.

Better health data. 315 in hospital, down 13 since y'day, although 120 are in ICU

This is the start of the daily #Covid19 thread for Tuesday.

So despite big increases in cases and hospitalisations, no further restrictions for #England. How bad will the data be today? We'll find out later and I'll update and analyse all the data worldwide as often as possible:
Boris has urged you all to be cautious in the packed bars and nightclubs on New Year's Eve, so that's ok then!

First to South America where #Argentina has just topped 20,000 new #Covid19 cases in a day for the first time since July.

20,263 is the daily total, up 280% compared with the week before.
31 deaths.
